Holy crap! I just heard that 11,000 people will be drafted by March 31, 2005. Anyone caought leaving to Canada will be sent straight to the military. If this is true, then Bush has gone too far. I just want to know if any of you know anything about this or if its true.
The bill was sponsored by Democrats in an attempt to generate anti-war sentiment. The current set of allegations about the Bush administration co-opting it are, so far, without any factual basis.

I'm not a U.S. citizen either, but my brother is. I just heard this from a guy in the back of the class. He said he just got a letter stating this. I'm not really scared, but I am alarmed about such things. If the draft were to happen, then this war is probably becoming something too big for us to handle. How many men in the U.S. are eligable for being drafted? Are women drafted? If so, are they put into a combat position? I need to know all of this in order to calculate the chances of out family being affected by this draft. I'm also worried about my cousin. He just turned 20, so its more probable that he is drafted, than my brother who's 19.
If you have to start a message with "a friend got an email/letter that said" or "I just got an email that said", especially if the email is a forward (has FWD: in it), Snopes is your best friend.

If its not going to happen or not, i wont take any chances. We must all be aware that if this war does indeed call for one in the future, then we must be prepared. The guy didn';t get an e-m@il, he got a LETTER on the U.S. Mail.

I have a trinity of reasons why I won't be drafted.
1. I am too old (29, almost 30) 2. I have three young kids. 3. As an engineer working in the manufacturing industry, I would be of more worth at my job than as cannon fodder.

I'm still worried. By this summer, my brother will have received his title as an electritian. I think that will make him be worth more at the war repairing machines... I do hope that it is all just a joke from our silly gov't.

Guess its true. Maybe we shouldn't be so worried or alarmed, but nonetheless ready if it turns out that there will be a draft in the long run.

See, I suck at just..."accepting" things. It just doesn't work for me. I'm going to sit here and fret about it until I figure something out.

Anyway, ready for a draft has many definitions depending on the person. for example, since my family's nationality is Mexican, no matter what, my brother and any one else of my family (except in-laws) are automatically mexican citizens. We can A.W.O.L. U.S.A. Its not like we care that "Canada is no longer an option". Lets go to Mexico and hang out at my grama's house!! When the war is over, I'm going to Japan!

Could we please stop the hysteria. There can be no draft without Congressional and Presidential authorization.
There's nothing you can do to prepare for a draft if it did happen, at least nothing that can't be done after the legislation advances past the "let's propose legislation we know won't pass for propoganda purposes" stage. Everyone will receive plenty of warning.
In the meantime, paranoid delusionals are getting great play out of this non-issue.

of course people also forget that our Sec Defence is anti draft, and proposed one of the first bills to abolish the draft (back after it was used the first time)

Dag, given that all three branches of the government are intensely neo-conservative at the moment, I don't see a draft as an impossibility, especially not after the November election and Bush's re-taking of the White House.
Out of interest, let's say it's December and Bush and the Congressional Republicans instate the draft. What would be your stance on the issue?

I guess that's even more incentive to stay at UVM (where the women are beautiful and the tuition remissed) for a good long time. It takes a long time to make a good computer programmer. Right?
Of course, I'm being silly.

What makes you think neocons want a draft? Again, it's the DEMOCRATS who want it. Not all of them, just the ones who drafted and sponsored the bill.

I would be opposed to it. Another reason to vote for the administration that is against it.
Oh, yeah, Kerry's against it too.
It ain't gonna happen, folks.
Dagonee Edit: WehatPuppet, there's no exemption for being in college any more.

Actually, if the Draft were instituted, they can draft up to age 36 IIRC. Not likely, even if the Draft WERE instituted, but possible

Things you can do to prepare for the draft.
(assuming you do not wish to be drafted).
10) Dress Warmly, oops, wrong kind of draft. 9) Get rich and powerful so you can follow in the footsteps of our neo-con leaders and buy your way out of active duty. (Coast Gaurd anyone?) 8) Do Ask. Do Tell. 7) Get photo's of yourself dressed in gender bending wardrobe. Store in safe place. 6) Go to Oxford like a previous non-neo-con leader where you are safe from the draft, and where you can try marijuana without inhaling. 5) Get knocked up, or go knock some chick up, so you can claim family duties require you to stay home. 4) Get a job in a defence plant, making MRE's or Nuclear weapons--whichever you are more proficient at. 3) Contract a near lethal disease. 2) Join the Church of Bob--the worlds leading pacifist church dedicated to the Sacricilious thread. 1) Join the Airforce. Just don't be a pilot. Its not like its a real military anyway.

What I mean is that since my brother is of Mexican nationality, he is considered a mexican citizen too. Thats just the way the system works over there. If in case there was a draft, then we could go to Mexico and my brother wouln't be drafted. When I said I would go live in Japan later, I meant that serously. I plan to live in Japan someday, I've always wanted to. On of my many dreams is to visit Kyoto while the cherry blossom blooms. That would be a priceless sight...
Anyway, asuming that the draft will go, what I need someone to tell me is what are the chances my brother or my cuisin will be drafted?
BTW, my brother is intrested in joining the National Guard, will that keep him away from Iraq?

10) Beat the rush, move to Canada now and acclimate to the cold.
9) Prove your insanity now. (Vote for the Green Party?)
8) Quit your job at the Post Office. They may seek out people with automatic weapons experience.
7) Renew your vows with that special someone in Massachusetts.
6) Pick up a few endangered parasites and then have yourself proclaimed an national wildlife preserve.
5) Prepare a video on UFO's landing in your backyard to probe Big-Foot.
4) Prepare a video of your senator performing illicit and degrading acts. Blackmail is an ugly word, but cannon-fodder is uglier.
3) Prepare all documents necessary to make an identity switch between you and your 12 year old sister.
2) Pefect that invisibility spell.
1) Commit a crime that will put you in prison for only as long as it takes you to be to old to be drafted, but that will leave you fabulously wealthy after that point. In other words, World Com CEO has a nice ring to it.
