All sorts of stuff. I mostly listen to the local classic rock station when I'm driving, as I can't really get into an album unless it's a long trip.

Radar Love, by Golden Earring, is perhaps the greatest driving song of all time.

The Eighties Trio of Seventeens

quote:
She's driving away with the dim lights on
She's making a play and she can't go wrong
She never waits too long
She's winding them down on her clock machine
And she won't give up 'cause she's seventeen ...

quote:
Just like the white winged dove
Sings a song,
Sounds like she's singing
Whoo... whoo... whoo...
Just like the white winged dove
Sings a song,
Sounds like she's singing
Ooo baby... ooo... said ooo

quote:
Saw him dancin there by the record machine,
Knew he must've been about seventeen,
Beat was goin strong,
Playin my favorite song,
'an I could tell it wouldn't be long till he was with me
yeah me
'an i could tell it wouldn't be long till he was with me
yeah me
singin ...

Eve 6's Horrorscope. Possibly my favourite summer driving album ever, save the lone ballad which I think is track 5.

Not just any Led Zepplin... it must be "In the Evening"

Van Halen's "Summer Nights" (and, in fact, most of that album, 5150)is also suitable.

Surprisingly, Rush's Presto album also makes great driving music, along with A-ha's East of the Sun, West of the Moon but those are not likely to earn you any cool points. I guess it depends if the music is for you or for those listening.

For an interesting experiment, try Big and Rich's "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" which can only be described as "redneck rap" and is a hell of a lot of fun to cruise to, though unfortunately it's only a couple of minutes long.

Edit: I can't believe I left out Hendrix's "Crosstown Traffic" and Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love"

"Shoulder to the Wheel" by Saves the Day is a good driving song... as are all of AFI's first three albums... >_> Depends on what you're really going for, though. =)

Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro

Audio Adrenaline's Lift, particularly "Summertime."

There are also several Aaron Copeland pieces that are good for summer cruising.

twinky - Is "Open Road Song" on that album?

That one's on my driving mix, along with:

"Born to be Wild", "Danger Zone", and "Crash", by The Primitives (and many others).

My favorite driving album is--don't laugh--the Dumb & Dumber soundtrack.

I'd also have to add Bob Seger's Turn the Page. And just about any Beach Boys tune.

Oooh, I also still love to listen to Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty" album when driving, except that I can't find it.

Another favorite car tape is Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane's "Rough Mix."

Also, Jerry Jeff Walker is great to drive to.

And, and and...

The classics: Radar Love, Born to be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride, Been a Long Time (Since I Rock 'n' Roll).

But also some more folksy stuff is good with the top down and the breeze in your hair: Friend of the Devil by the Dead, Judy Blue Eyes by CSN (don't forget Southern Cross, either).

Plus the first 10 songs on Great Big Sea's Road Rage album.

Celia, you’re breaking my heart

Oh, cecilia, I’m down on my knees
I’m begging you please to come home

Celia, you’re breaking my heart
You’re shaking my confidence daily
Oh, cecilia, I’m down on my knees
I’m begging you please to come home
Come on home

Making love in the afternoon with cecilia
Up in my bedroom (making love)
I got up to wash my face
When I come back to bed
Someone’s taken my place

Celia, you’re breaking my heart
You’re shaking my confidence daily
Oh, cecilia, I’m down on my knees
I’m begging you please to come home
Come on home

Jubilation, she loves me again,
I fall on the floor and I laughing,
Jubilation, she loves me again,
I fall on the floor and I laughing

Dag, good calls, especially Southern Cross.

Agree with TtS, too, a ton of Roxette is good driving music, the entire album Joyride, for example.

The first thing that comes to my mind is Huey Lewis and the News, especially their stuff from the Back to the Future soundtrack, but Fore! and Sports would work as well.
