For anyone who's interested: wear red on Friday to show your support of our troops. Doesn't matter whether you agree or disagree with the war; I think we all support our troops. I received this in an e-mail and thought it was a nice idea.

Is there a way to send troops things like... Soap, shaving things, candy? Stuff like that? I saw a sign on the library but they didn't specify an address. *cares for the troops*

The USO has a program called Operation Care Package. People can buy a care package for $25.00. Individuals are no longer allowed to send care packages to "Any soldier".

Wouldn't it make more sense to get involved in a political protest of some sort? I mean, a fashion statement is no more a show of support than wearing green on St. Patrick's Day is a statement of Irish nationalism.

Ugh. If there's anything worse than prostituting Jesus as an excuse to make people compliant with the party, it's prostituting the deaths of these soldiers.

(Yes, I've seen the maps, showing "red states" and "blue states" but I assumed the colors were picked by the news media, not the political parties). Can someone please enlighten me?

I don't think this is to show support for a certain party. It was sent to me by my cousin - who's brother (and my cousin) is a 20 y/o currently serving in Iraq.
As for Tom's response about a "fashion statement" - if that's the way you see it then obviously that's your opinion. My aunt has a banner hanging on her front door to show that her son is currently serving our country. That makes sense to me, as does wearing red to show support of my cousin and others like him.

Ok this is royally screwed up and I'll tell you why, a chain e-mail (which I deleted today because I think chain e-mails are stupid because not matter what they say no one takes them seriously because there are so many bs ones) said we should all wear red as a defiance of the current government in the tradition of Swedish and I think norweigan protests under the nazis wherein the mothers who were opposed to the regime knitted red caps for their kids and that was the begining of an organized effective underground rebellion. I disagree with that on a lot of levels but I'd have to say it probably makes more sense than wearing red for the troops.

Why do the fashion statement? There are other, better ways to support the troops. If the care package thing won't work, you can write a letter to your congressman expressing your views and what you want them to do about it.

there's a forum that I'm a regular on and they support a group called LBEH - primarily, we raise money to pay for airline tickets to fly troops home for the holidays. We also have several members who are active overseas, and we send packages. I don't think you can send stuff to "any soldier" but there should be a local or state group willing to help you direct your donations. I'll check and see if I can dig up more info over at ehowa.
