Ok, Friday, July 2nd, we're looking at meeting up with most of the Utah clump. If this doesn't work, we'd probably be able to do a different date. Ami has a lan party going on that night, so I figured this would probably be a good date for this, probably around noonish. If this does work out best for most people, but someone wants to meet her but can't due to conflicts, we could work something out.

So probably Provo, noonish, on the 2nd. Does that work?

Actually, we won't have a LAN party that weekend. But we can have a BBQ. We have a big back yard, now with a 12' X 28" pool. And a trampoline. And small creatures that can emit high pitched sounds.

Also, if Hatrackers really want to LAN, I would be willing to make accomodations for a Hatrack only LAN. If this is true, only Nate and Jamie can have an extra computer, which leaves only one left, so it would be BYOC for the rest of you.

<mysterious, hypnotic voice>
You are enticed.
You will come to Amka's house.

Summer's the best time to be in Provo (if you can even say that there's a "best" time). That's when all the students go away.

Ok, since Jamie wants to go talk to someone at BYU, I was thinking maybe 1:30, 2:00 would be when we meet. I'm all game for a bit of a LAN afterwards, but I think it kind of depends on how many others. Does that work out?

Jamie...get the tour!

[Big Grin]

I LOVED meeting the folks there. You all are so nice. And I'm not even LDS (newly minted or otherwise). I can just imagine what a good time Jamie will have there.

Can she take her camera into the inner sanctum and send us all pictures?

OKay, I know...she can't do that. But still, it would be nice.

Have fun!

Don't forget the banner at the airport!

Frankly, I wouldn't be able to meet at 1:30 for more than half an hour, maybe. I work from 8 a.m to 5 p.m., and I've been taking off a lot of work lately. If we did something in the evening, though (like the shindig at Amka's that was talked about), I would definitely be there. What exactly is going on at Amka's this Friday night?

I will plan on it. What to bring? I guess we'll bring our own meat, a noodle salad, and home made rolls. Possibly jello if I think of it.

P.S. I know that sounds like a lot, but I am bringing several mouths to eat it as well.

I have to admit, I'm curious as to why non-Mormons can't see the temple -- or, for that matter, how you keep them out. Is there a retinal scan before you enter? Do you need to flash your LDS membership card, or maybe Mormon hand signals? Is the temple a decoy, and fills up with sand whenever a trespasser wanders in, little suspecting the real temple is located underground and can be reached only through sliding down a series of poles, the wrong combination leading to a slicked pole which drops you in a pit of starved gophers?

Hmm. These are unlikely, I'm guessing, but only for the moment due to popular lack of imagination. To the patent office!

As I've said numerous times in chat, they're hiding their tanning booths and weight gyms. If you look at the BoM closely, nowhere will you find the words "pump iron" backwards. That's a little bit too uncommon to be purely coincidental, I says.

All joking aside, nonmembers cannot go into the temple because it is a sacred place. Only members who are worthy (ie. keep the commandments, are morally clean, etc.) can go in. And actually, Lalo, you were right with one of your guesses ( [Wink] ) people do flash a membership card of sorts. It's a temple recommend that you can only get from having interviews with two different religious leaders (bishop and stake president) in which you answer questions about your worthiness.

It's not the temple so much that is sacred—if it were, we wouldn't do open houses and whatnot before the temple is dedicated. If you want to see pictures, look here. Generally they look very beautiful and functional. The main reason non-Mormons cannot see inside is because of what is happening. We believe that the more a person knows, the more accountable he or she is to act on that knowledge. Therefore, if a person is baptized, he or she is under higher obligation to God than a person who isn't. A person who knows he or she should be baptized but chooses not to for whatever reason is also more accountable for that decision than someone who doesn't know. In the temple, members of the LDS church make promises to God that are very serious, and it would be a lot worse to make the promises and break them than to never make the promises at all. Not quite as serious would be to get all the way there and be faced with the promises and choose not to make them. Still, even this would be worse than never being faced with the promises. Does that make any sense?

quote:

Members desiring to enter the temple must meet with the leader of their congregation and their area leader for an interview. This interview asks several questions that determine worthiness to enter the temple. If you "pass," you get a little card called a temple recommend. You show it to the people at the door when you come in.

Changing the subject, Amka, what would you like Jon Boy and me to bring? Are we just barbecuing? Is it "bring your own meat"?

The LDS Church used to own a gym just north of Temple Square in Salt Lake. They tore it down and built the Conference Center. Coincidence? I think not.

So the fat Mormons are the ones who don't go to the temple regularly? That sure makes it easy for me to be judgemental.

Bring a swimming suit, or at least a change of clothes [Big Grin]

Ami is not freaking about what time everybody shows up. Come, and when enough people are here we'll start cooking. I need to know how many people are coming.

I was going to make it BYOM, but I'm in the mood for some seriously good hamburgers from the grill. I will provide these. Everybody else bring something appropriate.

Now, one thing that we could do rather than LAN is hooking up X-boxes together. We also have DDR-Max with two dance pads.

But if we have enough people, I want to play live mafia.

My baby weighs about 24 pounds. If I don't change her diaper between now and then, she will be about 26. How many should that serve?

P. S. I was sort of bummed by one change made to the Nauvoo temple between the public tours and the dedication. During the open house there was, in the chapel, a photo of a stained glass window from our ward. When I went back a couple of months later, it was gone...

But I seriously doubt it was doctrinal. I think when the Apostles toured the temple, maybe one of them really liked the picture and they gave it to him or something like that.

Also, due to my husband's belief that mad cow is widespread in the American beef supply, we will probably still have to bring our own meat.
