I'm going to Mexico on July 26. My friend Vanessa an I wanted to go on an adventure, and I planned to do research while I was there for an independent study I'm doing next fall on tree symbolism in Mexican folk art. It's all very exciting - we're planning to go to Oaxaca and Chiapas.
Only Vanessa just called me and said she's not getting the $4,000 in financial aid she was counting on and will have to use her savings to live next semester - she can't come. She's willing to pay me back for her (non-refundable) ticket if it's not transferable, but that still leaves me with a $350 (non-refundable) ticket and no one to travel with. My grandmother was already frightened enough that two young girls were going alone.. I don't think anyone would let me go by myself.
My question (my imploring, rather) is this: is anyone interested in a once-in-a-lifetime fun trip adventure opportunity? I'm doing the whole trip for $1,000, taking buses everywhere and staying in hostels - which is very economical for a three-week trip. My flight dates are July 26 and August 19, and I'm leaving from Salt Lake, but could meet someone in Mexico City.
This is your opportunity to have all kinds of spontaneous fun and heck, out of sheer gratitude I'll even buy you a helado!

I so would if I could - that sounds simply heavenly. When are you going? I probably can't, but it'd be fun to dream.

July 26 - August 19. Just the right time for a summer fling. Your boss would totally understand

Well... I would have definitely been interested if I didn't already have plans for those weeks. Good luck finding someone. It sounds like a ton of fun.

Annie, can you sell your ticket on E-bay? Maybe recover some? I don't know how that works.
Then you can use the money you would have used on hostels for a ticket to KamaCon, and you can bunk with Farmgirl and Ivygirl or someone. There'll be a place.

I think I may well go by myself. I'm getting the same kind of well-then-forget-you attitude I got when I went to the prom by myself. Only this is a little further away than the prom. Mwa ha ha ha!

I think someone should market an album of songs U2 has covered. That would be beautiful on its own.

Whatever she does, she better have a good time. Or else. Umm...or else something, I don't know what exactly but it would break my heart if she doesn't.

You never did tell me how you faired... any significant cuts or bruises? Ohh, and now I feel a little better about being so annoying whenver you went close to the edge of the cliff at spring break, so at least something good came of it.

No, see, when I was there my constant, annoying, unattractive nagging kept you from hurting yourself; but when left to your own devices, well, we can see the results in the shape of a fascinating crescent moon.

Hmm... well I would except I'm not really sure where they are, and even when I find them I'll still have to scan them in... but tell you what, you send me those pictures of you in the parade, and I'll get cracking on the spring break pictures.

Sorry Annie - I did the wild and whacky thing when I went to Europe for a month after graduation.
If I had the cash and the spare time, I'd cheerfully go - although since I've tacked on a car payment and insurance to my list of expenses, my options are severely limited.

:thwaps flaky friend on the noggin: Can you perhaps shorten your stay, if kat would seriously be able to go?
I think you need to just pray about whether you should go alone. If you aren't overwhelmed with foreboding, then thank granny for her concern, or find out if she is concerned enough to bail you out of your ticket.

My dates are pretty much etched in stone - my plane ticket is entirely inflexible. (That's what you get when they're cheap!)
The good news is, my brother may be able to get some leave time and come with me. Let's all communally cross our fingers.

I thought that even when you got the cheap tickets, you could still change flights and times but appropriate (and possibly excessive) charges would apply. If your brother can't join you it might be worth checking out.
And normally, I would love to go to Mexico, particularly for cheap, but unfortunately there's lots of me moving from one state to another to another during that time period...

Yeah, let's hope the brother can manage it! I would so go except for the requirement that I look for and find a job in the next week or so before I totally run out of money for bills.
