I am a computer lab instructor at a small private school. I am going to be teaching math to one or two very advanced 5th graders, in addition to my normal classes. The school has above average students in general and these students are significantly above the advanced math class. Last year the boy took an online course, while his classmates were in math. He did fine, but we want to give him more teacher interaction. I get the job because I have tutored middle school math and I am the only male teacher (we are hoping I will be a role model for improvement with some maturity issues).
The plan is to continue the online class while working through the advanced 6th grade textbook. A lot of the textbook will be a review, but we want to make sure he doesn’t have any holes. Next year, the schedule in middle school is flexible enough to allow him to take the appropriate math class.
I also want to do fun math games, memory challenges and mind teasers. Give me some of your favorite things from childhood. I am looking for things that are fun, educational and challenging to an abstract thinker. Think advanced 7th grade level.
I have a few ideas and plenty of resources online, but I know many of you grew up spending time in enrichment classes and I value your opinion.
Thanks for the help.

Did he take the EPGY course? Is that the advanced math course he took online?
For some great resources and ideas, I would check out this web page. It helped me a lot in guiding my own gifted children through their advanced academics...

(I'm not math gifted myself, so don't have any personal items to share -- although I will say I was amazed at how much I loved Statistics when I got to college level math. It had lots of real-world application...)
I do not know the name of his online course. I just found out about the situation and agreed to help out. I haven't met with last years math instructor to go over exactly what he has covered.
The link looks like a lot of great reading. Thanks.
