I have a friend in the National Guard. He volunteered for duty in Iraq and will be doing some training in Texas and then he will head for the Middle East. He'll probably be driving humvees, which I understand can be pretty dangerous. Prayers and good thoughts for his safety would be appreciated, I'm sure.
I really hope he comes back all in once piece, physically and mentally.

"Pvt. Gustafson admitted he was nervous but added he was kind of excited. 'It's something new.'"
I think he will be okay. (Well, I hope nothing terrible happens to him). He's not a nervous wreck about it at least. Of couse, most of his friends are doing that for him. Hmph.

An old friend of mine just got deployed from the National Guard to Iraq as well. He's been in the guard for years now and was begged to re-up this past summer with the promise that he would go to Drill Instructor school.
Well, DI school was scheduled to start in September, but he got notice of deployment in June. Tough break, they told him.
To compound matters, he had been unemployed for most of last year, with a wife and two kids, and had finally found a good job, two weeks before getting the notice. He had also gotten within a month of completing his training to be an MRI technician. Because of the timing he: 1) lost the new job (had not been employed long enough for the Guard job guarantees to take effect) and 2) couldn't get his certification with MRIs because of losing that last month of training.
So now, he goes to Kuwait and Iraq to drive trucks and set up communications equipment. The timing couldn't be worse, but he's going to do his duty and fulfill his commitments, even if the Guard and the government didn't do much about their commitments to him.

Good luck to your friend! My cousin is currently there as an MP who sometimes guards convoys, so don't worry - you're friend will be in good hands.
