The nominating floor is now open for the best chick flicks of all time. I'm blatantly stealing Eslaine's polling format and doing a series of polls that will truly determine once and for all which movie is the true incarnation of the female essence. One need not be female to participate, but no snarkiness allowed and The Dirty Dozen is NOT eligible.

Ugh. That was just bad.

"Sleepless in Seattle" was much better.

Woman, desperately seeking to gain her freedom from a man she still loves yanked back into a life of violence she's desperately trying to leave behind.

Sounds like a Lifetime original movie to me. [Evil]

Love Actually
French Kiss

I'll second Return to Me.

Funny story. As Christine and I were leaving the theater after seeing Return to Me, I was trying to remember its name (we'd seen it on a whim, not even really knowing what it was going to be; we often do that, and it's something that I really enjoy). I turned back, looking at the marquee, and spotted what seemed to me to be the most like contender: Where the Heart Is. I couldn't decide if this was a screamingly funny name for the movie or proof of the producer's very bad taste. When she finished laughing, Christine pointed out my mistake.

For a formula romantic comedy "You've got mail" is one of the better ones.

So is "Notting Hill", which I hereby nominate.

Are "Joe vs. The Volcano" or "The Wedding Singer" considered chick flicks? If so, I'd like to nominate those.

And the list dabbler linked to said "Romancing The Stone" and "The Princess Bride" are chick flicks, so I'm also nominating those.

And I'll second "10 Things I Hate About You".

And I have to second French Kiss.

"A healthy person is someone who expresses what they’re feeling inside. Express, not repress."
"In that case, you must be one of the healthiest people in the world."
"Why shut me out? You know what happens to people who shut everybody out?"
"They lead quiet, peaceful lives?"
"No, they fester. Fester and rot."

I don't care what dabbler's list says, Casablanca, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Big Chill are not chick flicks. And not only is Beautiful Girls not a chick flick, but most women I know that have seen it actively dislike it for being a guy movie.

Some are marginal. I could see arguments for The American President, Meet Joe Black, Footloose, and Splash. But Lara Croft: Tomb Raider? Are you kidding me?

Having said all that, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned When Harry Met Sally or Dirty Dancing. For entirely different reasons, mind you.

That, Corwin was An Affair to Remember. Which, being quoted in Sleepless in Seattle makes it a double-superpowered chick-flick. Just like The Shop Around the Corner.

I loved Miss Congeniality, but the end totally ruined and negated the whole movie for me. Woman learns to find her femininity, confidence, and love for other women. What is her reward? She gets the jerk. [Mad] [Mad] [Mad]

This guy never respected her. He treated her like rubbish. He will continue to treat her like rubbish. He showed her an ounce of "appreciation" and she falls for it hook, line, and sinker! It's like the horrid, horrid ending of My Fair Lady. Pygmalion at least had a proper ending!

I'm not a huge fan of chick flicks. I am trying to think of any that I actively love.
