It's been along time since I've played a pen & paper RPG. (20 years) I'd like to get back into it, but don't know where to start. Is there a RPGs for Dummies book out there?
I need help with everything from the rules to character creation. What's the best way to go about this. My biggest problem is that I don't know anybody in the Phoenix area who plays.
I'd love to get into one of the email games that pop up on Hatrack, but would need someone to guide me through the character creation process.
Where do I begin my quest to get back into RPGing?

If you want to find a local gaming group, stop in a game shop and inquire as to any gaming groups. Most shops keep a notice board for players and groups to connect. You can also leave a note yourself.
As to character creation, on Ed's D&D thread, there are several links to the new AD&D d20 3.5 system which has replaced the more traditional dungeons and dragons game you may be familiar with.
The basic rules are free to download and use - which, if you're on a budget, can be quite useful for learning the basics.

Also, knowing the rules of an rpg is really not significant. Far more important is your ability to roleplay. Believe me, there are a million rules lawyers out there and very few honest to goodness roleplayers.

Thanks for all the input and the links. Is anybody going to be starting a new game soon? I'm currently watching the progress of Eduardo's game, but would like to play in a game.
One more question. Is there a character class that's best suited for a newbie?

I may be running a game here in a few months, and would be happy to have role playing newbies participate. My work's newly implemented anti-webmail policy may get in the way of that though. I should know soon.

I think my mom may still have my White Wolf books in a box somewhere in the back of her office. I had the Mage book, but I never got around to playing it. Ditto for Faerie. I did play a few games of Vampire and Werewolf, though. Does anyone have a preference among the White Wolf games?
My personal fave was the Amber RPG. Followed closely by Paranoia.

I've heard good things about Amber, but diceless just doesn't compute in my head. Does it work well?

I think so. However, most of the RPing my friends and I did back in the day was completely diceless, free-form RP, so that may have had a lot to do with it. Amber was like that, except more structured.

The Amber game I played was pretty fun. You just have to let the GM have the final say and enjoy participating in the story.

I'm interested in what they do with it with the new WoD: Reloaded thing, but the Mage ruleset won't be out until next March.
In the meant time, I may be playing to Lovecrafty goodness at skotos.net. They got a Lovecraft license, and are creating a MUSH based in the HPL universe. I've been thinking up a cool character all day.
Mage was interesting, but a little freeform for my taste. I never developed a taste for any of the White Wolf games, although now they're moving to a standard core ruleset and supplements for the various groups.

Best magic system out there, in my opinion! :-)
Derrel, it seems that Wizard of the Coast is finishing producing a box for D&D newbies, useful for one who wants to enter the beautiful D20 world

In 3rd edition Ars Magica, combine "Stone of a Hundred Shards" (CrTe 15) with "Wielding the Invisible Sling" (ReTe 5) and you have an automatic grenade launcher.

There isn't. I think they're re-releasing the line, but I don't follow the White Wolf gossip to know if they plan on re-releasing Mage along with the current "World of Darkness" and "Vampire".
You might find an illegal pdf copy somewhere, but the company has not made their product open source.

I really haven't played that many non-AD&D role playing games--just haven't had the opportunity. If someone were to decide to run, say, Mage or Amber, I'd love to participate. I've read through the Amber rulebook pretty thoroughly in the distant past, and skimmed it recently. It's always looked really cool, but I don't think I'd be up to running a game of it myself, at least not now.
