Starting today (9/24) Shawshank Redemption will get a limited theatrical rerelease in eight cities for two weeks this fall in celebration of the film's 10th anniversary and to promote Warner Home Video's two-disc special DVD edition debuting on October 5.
Check out moviefone.com to find out if SR is coming to your city.
Edited to add: The eight cities are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle and Austin.

Very good indeed! I already have the "normal" DVD, but I'll be buying the special edition as soon as it comes to Brazil.

It doesn't look like it katharina. I tried searching for the movie in two Dallas area zip codes (75225 and 75219) and moviefone said it is not playing in those areas. To be sure, you can enter your zip code into the "search by location" box, click enter, and then enter "shawshank redemption" into the "search by movie" box.

Chad, the whole point of the movie is a condemnation of our court system, and how prisoners are /were used for the profit of the people in charge of the prisons. Also, it is an innocent person who is wrongly convicted and punished, and forced to work for the "capitalistic pigs" in charge.
Not that I believe that is what was intended, but I think it has some merits when viewed that way.

It's kind of mean for you guys to harsh on Chad for what you perceive as his views. I mean, we don't jump on your back for liking a movie that portrays (x conservative value).

Just to be clear, I was perfectly sincere. I think Chad is relaxing enough in our company to be just meandering around, talking about this and that. It's so cool.
(Of course, this may be making him yet more tense -- the pointing it out, though. But I promised him lavishment with positive reinforcement for trying to meet us halfway.
Actually, I think Chad's eventually going to be nearly as hooked as Telpy, and we do need new blood, as Katie says. Roughs up the place a little bit, makes it more interesting. )

Really? The point I got out of it was:
Andy suffers for something he did not do. He chooses to overcome and to hang on to who he is, instead of allowing his sufferings to corrupt him or break his spirit. In the end, he succeeds in freeing himself.
We can liken this to ourselves: we're all like Andy, because we are subject to forces beyond our control and suffer for someone else's sins. We are all "in prison for crimes we did not commit." What matters is how we respond to it.

Yep, this is an adaptation of a Stephen King short - and a fairly accurate one as well, in my opinion, perhaps one of the most accurate adaptations I've ever seen. There were some details from the novella that were left out - such as Andy's time with a cellmate - but I didn't think that those omissions detracted from the story.
And I LOVE the looks I get from people when I tell them that "by the way, Stephen King wrote that"... especially if they just sat there telling me that they hate his work.

Goody I watched Shawshank 2 days ago on DVD, and was very moved. I also watched Green Mile the day before, and ditto. (On holiday at the moment.) I'd read Green Mile earlier in the year, and loved it. I read it on the back of Hearts in Atlantis, which I also loved. Despite this, I'm not a regular Stephen King fan, as I don't like HORROR (!). But I have been really impressed at his ability to tell a powerful and moving story with characters that I can believe in, and in a way that can give me so much gratitude for the goodness in people, and the ways that that can be discovered. Can you, as a King fanatic, recommend any other books of the Green Mile/Shawshank type?

Bag of Bones and Dolores Claiborne come to mind. The Body, which was adapted into a fairly well-known movie called Stand By Me, is also pretty good, though I'm not sure which collection it can be found in.
I love almost every book of his which I've read, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head that you might enjoy.

I think his short works are much better, too, though since he has started to conquer the impulse to ramble in his novels, I think the two are maybe starting to even out. Well, not to be annoying, but thanks to this thread, I got 2 tickets to tonights 8:45 showing of Shawshank at the Boston Common Cinema, just a 20 inute ride on the subway from my apartment
Actually, rather than being a strict Marxist critique of anything, I see Shawshank, from a sociological POV as a critique of the "retribution" style of punishment, and implying that the "rehabilitiation" method of punishment as being much nobler.

The problem is, most of the people making movies based on King works don't get King, and don't get his popularity. They see the 'fur and the fangs' and think that's what draws people to his works, because afterall, he's the "King of HORROR!" - they don't get that what we love is the complex and deep characterization that makes you feel like you really KNOW the characters in a King work - even the one-chapter-boys who you get to know excrutiatingly well right before they do something horrible to him. In the books, it's wrenching. In so many of the movies, it's slapstick.
Frank Darabont (Shawshank, Green Mile), Rob Reiner (Stand By Me, Misery), and Mick Garris (The Stand, The Shining:TV Version) are the three main directors who really seem to get King.

It was pretty sweet to see it on the big screen! There was an annoying crowd though (3 cell phone rings, two time a cell phone screen, when people were passing it around to read a text message), people making weird comments, including one who had never seen the movie before, apparently.
The movie itself? Awesome. The sound track really shines through on modern audio (even if the movie itself is in stereo).
