What one item or image says "Gaming" to you? I'm talking particularly about video gaming. When you think of video games, what comes to mind? A controller? A specific console? A screenshot? What is the epitome of gaming?

Everquest. If for no other reason than no other video game ever kept my interest for 4 years.

I've played all of my games on a PC, with keyboard and mouse... So:

- controller? No, not really.

- specific console? Definitely not. I can do well enough with mouse and keyboard for most of the games. (not a big fan of car games)

- screenshot? See, there's a big problem with this: not all good looking games are nice to play, and not all good games are good looking. There always something unexplainable that gets people to play games like Heroes of Might and Magic, or Commander Zod (I bet you didn't hear of that one) instead of some good looking but good for nothing game! When Z2 came out (that's the sequel of Commander Zod - or Z), I thought 'Yey, finally', but it was so hard to play that with all the 'improved' graphics, 3dimentionality and whatnot I still didn't like it.

- story? Yeah, right, like anybody cares for the story behind Quake 3 & the likes! All we want from those is a little adrenaline rush!

For me, what playing meant - since I haven't really played a video game in quite a while - was escaping from reality into a world with (mostly) well defined rules where your reflexes / tactical skills / strategical skills / construction skills really matter. And you don't have to go to school! [Wink] It's like you're in control of everything, which can be pretty important when you're just a kid whose only choice seems to be to 'listen to your parents'...

I found it: the epitome of gaming is 'alternate reality'. It's like a book but lets you interract too. It might be a cliche, but hey, that might just mean I'm right! [Big Grin]

Now when's that Ender's Game game coming out?!

When someone says "gaming" or "gamer", Halo and Half-life usually come to mind.

I'd have this problem even if I weren't a gamer (I've had long stretches where I didn't play at all...Still no dates [Frown] )

But here's a good quote the typifies gaming...

"Just one more [level, round, turn, kill, trade, race, etc.]"

I just think of work.

Probably different for me than you. [Smile]

I probably think of the original Atari joystick first (once I get past the work thing).

I really get attached to the opening sequence to a gaming system or to a game, for example:

The Playstation 1 opening sequence with the large, colorful "P" and "S" and the trademark theme to accompany...

The mechanical goblin at the beginning of Dungeon Seige that gets the DS logo dropped on its head...

The Queen of Blades image of Kerrigan from Starcraft: Broodwar during loadup...

The thundering percussion and the undulating bacteria at the intro to Halo...

Lately I have been wading through Neverwinter Nights Platinum and have this reoccuring vision of a single eye haunting my dreams...

So basically, I visualize and imagine Gaming to be whatever system or game I have been using most recently.

When I say this I had to think for a second, because of the DS.

Dagonee,

We've got you beat. We've been playing EQ as a family for almost 5 years. No plans to move to EQII, because with 3 accounts, it would be too darned expensive. Besides, our chars are just now getting to interesting levels.

Seriously... If you are in the 20's-30's age range and this doesn't scream gaming to you... well, you suck and can't be my friend. [Smile]

Ok, you can be my friend but you definately suck.

Enjoyment, excitement, being a part of something, teamwork, relaxation, peace, war, love, hate.

These things are what come to mind when I think of gaming.

The really old Super Mario. And Duck Hunt.

And for some reason, both me and my little brother sitting in front of the tv, game consoles in hand and spazing out with the movements of the television screen.
