You know how a lot of actors use a stage name. Well they aren't the only ones. Did you know that the directors do this too? M. Night Shyamalan, for example. That's actually a shortened version of his real name:

M. Night Shyamala-ma-ding-dong.

I think it's amusing. It would be absolutely downright hilarious to a kid... but then they'd have to know who M. Night Shyamalan is... or maybe not.

I got a chuckle.

Is it funny? Depends on the delivery. If you sing the last part, with a bit of 50's Rock hip gyration, well then....

I vote not funny.

Although I've seen a bunch of the late night guys do versions of that play on his name, and I didn't think any of them were particularly clever.

I made up a joke:

The Tooth Fairy was brought before the Grand Jury for an indictment hearing. The prosecution brought the evidence to the jury, including a signed statement wherein the Tooth Fairy admitted to breaking and entering, reaching into young children's beds, taking their old baby teeth away, and leaving money under the children's pillows.

The jury decided that charges should be brought on multiple counts of Incisor Trading.

I did not make up this joke, but it's dumb and gave me a giggle and is based on the same principle as those in the thread:

There was a doctor who didn't handle the stress of his job very well, and would stop by a bar on the way home each night. The bartender got to know him pretty well, and got to the point where he'd always have an almond daquiri waiting for the doctor when he arrived. One day, the bartender started to make the doctor's drink when he realized he was out of almonds. He did have a handful of hickory nuts, though, and used those to make a daquiri. The doctor arrived, and started in on his drink. Then he stopped, and said, "Hey, are you sure this is an almond daquiri?"

The bartender replied, "No, it's a hickory daquiri, doc."

Crotalus, keep working on it. You could have a good punchline there, but the setup makes it fall flat. If you can make up a story where somehow the character and a fifties song come together, it might work as a joke.

Crotalus: It made me chuckle.

Tante and Megan: Your jokes made me chuckle too =)

(edit: I have this visual image of the cast of Grease singing that man's name...)

I swear I may have called him that too..."Shymaladingdong" but only because I was actually refering to him and not setting up a joke. SO: Yes, make fun of his name all you want but only as an aside if he ever comes up in discussion--don't set it up as a joke. And since "Lady in the Water" is coming out soon, Crotalus, you may just get your chance!

What's funny about M. Night Shyamalan's "real" name? If it's from a song, I don't know it.

I have seen the first joke several places, starting with when Signs came out.

So...it doesn't really matter - it's an old joke, and you need new material. [Wink]
