I did not know that. Then again, I only saw half of the last season of The X-Files.

It's still pretty darn cool, though.

/. is a website. Slashdot.org. It's an online news site focused on technical and scientific news. Common news bullets will be the latest machine released by Apple, or links to the Cassini-Hyugens space probe.

Bean Counter is an ascerbic member of the community. IIRC, he's also known as DisgruntledPostman and possibly Jar Head, depending on who you ask. There seem to be three general viewpoints on him: Ignore him and he'll go away (one way or another); interact with him in a normal, or semi-normal way, figuring he'll "get it" eventually; have him removed from the community--forcefully.

A troll is poster on any forum who behaves in such a way as to break down the fabric of the community. Typically, this is being rude, insulting, or decietful. This forum, in particular, is very sensitive to trollish behavior. On others, it's standard operating procedure.

Welcome to Hatrack!
Perhaps an intro is in order?

I'm messing with you. Mulder's apartment number is 42 because that was the solution to the question of Life, the Universe and Everything in the Douglas Adams novel.

A troll is a word for someone who is perceived as trying to damage the community. I missed a lot of the Bean counter action, apparently. But there is no link to /. per se. I think people ascribe someone they feel is a troll to either /. or a multiple personality of Bean counter. But there were always trolls.

Introduce yourself! [Smile]

The people on this forum are unusually friendly for a message board. A great many know each other in real life, usually after meeting here first.

Hello, Pythian! Welcome to Hatrack. I'm glad you've enjoyed your stay here so far. By the way, since you brought up 42, you might wish to read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's a pretty popular book among science fiction fans. Many of our jokes and references here are based on the Hitchhiker's Guide and other books/movies that most of us are familiar with, so the banter around here can get a bit confusing. I'm glad you are brave enough to ask questions about it!

I wonder if Bean Counter is beginning to replace Cedrios in the Hatrack Consciousness as the Troll Who Wouldn't Die.

The serious answer is that in the book Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the number 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Seriously.

Edit: I swear there was a post from Pythian in there asking for clarification on 42. I'm not crazy and I didn't double post! [Razz]

Here's a really old thread addressing just that:
http://www.hatrack.com/ubb/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=012940;p=2#000076

A lot of the veteran members of Hatrack have many pseudonyms.

Also, the reading list for Hatrack is equal to all the books you could concievably read in your lifetime... plus one. There are so many biblioholics on this forum it's a little scary, and they're always talking about books I've never heard of. If there's a reference you don't get, it's okay to ask. [Smile]

By the way, I read this awesome book the other day, Yoruba Warfare in the 19th Century... [Razz]

Welcome to Hatrack, Pythian, and Happy Seventeenth!

I too found this great group of people from one of Card's books. In my case it was an afterword in Crystal City (or was it Heartfire? in any event, I know it was just after finishing CC that I wandered in)

As for other books and movies you should know about here, this is a good thread to check out. =)

I read about it in Heartfire, which I read in hardcover as soon as it came out. I think it was Heartfire...whichever book he mentions Hatrack in first. I have all of those boos now, but I don't remember offhand which book had the froward by him mentioning Hatrack for the first time...but since I had read all of them up to that point, I KNOW if was in which ever book he talked about it first....lol...

I spent a lot of time without a computer...I have only had my own computer for about a year now....so I was limited on how often I could post. I usually posted only at the library, or at my parents house when I went down to visit them. I was addicted pretty quickly though, and once I got my own computer my post count exploded...lol...

I love it here, even when I am pissed about something happening.....wait a while, you will see what I mean... [Big Grin]
