I did great on my last one, she scored me 49/50. Well, I wouldn't say I did great - I didn't think I deserved 49/50, but I heard from other students that the instructor graded everyone leniently. Which makes me fear she will not do so again. (or maybe she will, and my worry is for naught)

Tonight's a demonstration speech, and we have to be doing something and explaining as we go. I'm going to demonstrate how to dye a silk scarf, which I know how to do, and I've even taught people how to do it before, but not in a 3-5 minute time frame. You have a 30 second grace period, but after 5 and a half minutes you lose points.

We've been so busy this week, I haven't had a chance to do it and let my mom or hubby time me - and I don't think I will have that chance.

It's scary, because last time I timed at 2 min 30 sec for a 3 minute speech, and came in barely under the grace period. When I get nervous I ramble, and add things to my speeches.

I feel so much pressure because I'm trying to make up for some mistakes I made when I attended college years ago - I really need A's in these classes to get my GPA to the point that I can enter the teacher education program.

Somebody tell me to stop panicking and go rehearse.

Stop panicking! Go rehearse!

Seriously, you'll do fine. Just don't get nervous and suddenly realize you've dyed 14 scarves without stopping and the other students are edging away from you...

Go practice. And try to squeeze in a way to have someone time you.

And good luck.

Thanks guys, I'm going. Wes is going to be home later to take care of the kids while I go, Mom has a function tonight (which I was invited to - a "Meet the author" event at a local library for some guy whose books I've never read) so she won't be home at all.

Thing is, I don't have all that many scarves to practice on....so I can't do too many more practice rounds. I made and sold so many before Christmas my stock was way down, and I haven't placed any orders since then.

Ok, ok, I'm typing stuff now just to avoid rehearsing. I'm outta here.

Just get it all in and use and extra time you have to review and sum up. Have extra tips ready for the end.
Sounds like you’ll do great

Ask one of your fellow students to give you hand signals to indicate the time. When I did speeches, I usually asked for signals at 2 minutes and thirty seconds before time ran out. This is a widely accepted practice during speech/debate tournaments so your instructor should be ok with it.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll be great! [Wink]

Okay, I just went through it and by self-timing I was a little over 4 minutes. That's pretty good, it gives me almost a minute and a half to go over and still be okay. Whew.

Plus, my sample came out, which was good - I dyed one this morning using the exact same colors and techiniques so that the audience can see a version of the finished product.

I'm feeling a little better now.

We do have signals - the instructor gives someone in the audience notes to hold up to let you know when you're nearing your time limits -she gives you one at 2 minutes to go, one minute to go, 30 seconds, and times up. When you get times up, you must wrap up within 30 seconds to avoid a penalty.

50/50 points!

[Party]

Next up - impromptu speech. NO sense worrying over that, I don't even know the topic til I get there.

But our teacher is extremely lenient, I messed up several times last night, I even felt vaguely uncomfortable that I got such a good grade.

On the flip side....I'm still having trouble figuring out my history instructor. I read the chapters, answer all the provided study questions, and have the book open during the chapter quiz. And I still average missing 1 or 2 questions per quiz. Some of these questions feel like they're not in the book, but since it's an online class, it's not like I can pick up the information from a lecture. [Dont Know]

I still have an A average on all the quizzes, but this tendency to throw in weird questions has me worried about the mid-term and final in this class.

A lot of times mistakes during speeches are only perceptible to the speaker herself. I'm sure you did much better than you give yourself credit for. Congratulations! [Smile]
