I am listening to Ladysmith Black Mambazo right now, and it's amazing. It's music that basically personifies strength and joy in the face of adversity. I keep on just smiling while I listen to it. You should all listen to the NPR interview with this guy. His speaking voice sounds like spoken word poetry!

Wow! This guy is so amazing. His words are like little drops of honey dripping from his mouth. There's just a... viscosity in what he is saying. And its almost as if he's tasting and enjoying the words as he speaks them. Occasionally, he'll just sigh or make some sound that... Ach! Just listen.

Another African musician I adore is Mamadou Diabate. He plays a many-stringed guitar-like instrument called a "kora," and he is amazing.

He sits to play, and I almost feel over when he stood up, because he is very, very tall. Also extremely beautiful. Something about him just shines.

Completely unrelated but also good is (in my opinion) Gene Chandler's "The Duke of Earl".

I'm listening to a German mix now, and the song playing "Steh auf (wenn du am Boden bist)" by Die toten Hosen always makes me smile.

Almost all music (if it fits the category of "music" by my standards) makes me smile. [Smile]

A whole album which makes me grin is David Lindley's "El Ray-o X."

Lately, Meredith Brooks' "Bitch," just because it so perfectly captures a friend of mine.

Comic (sort of) folk singer-songwriters Christine Lavin and Rufus Wainwright.

Also, my 16-yr old daughter has been bombarding me with mixes she's making of rhythm-n-blues greats Al Green, Bill Withers, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye... These put a smile in me from head to toe.

John, me too.
There is a radio station in Boston which has "Bedtime Magic" at 9:00, or used to, and they played all those old soul, r and b songs.

Ah, the Chi-Lites...
