Hey, I've been looking for a server as a host for bandwidth space for my knitting blog. My roommate was supposed to help me on this, but he's really been dragging his feet.
I think that I'd be able to set stuff up on my own without his help once I have a server to use, but I really don't know anything about servers or what would be good for the price that they'd be charging. I'd be willing to pay for one as long as what I'm getting is what I need. I'm just wanting a place to host buttons and maybe a couple of other items.
So what's your opinion, fellow Jatraqueros? Can ya help a gal out?

I like 1and1, myself, largely because they gave away 3 years of free, good quality hosting a little while back.
Looks like they're offering a free business pro package for 6 months right now, I'd suggest going for that. Its only $9.99 a month after, and there really is no obligation to continue whatsoever (and they're not particularly pushy about it). They don't have much downtime, and their customer service is fairly responsive. Plus, plenty of bandwidth.

Hmm...thanks for the suggestion Fugu. I'll definitely take that into consideration-it looks a little complicated though (but maybe I'm just getting scared looking at all the stuff on their front page, and should just pay attention to where you told me to). You said that you'd never had any problems with it though, right?

They do take steps to ensure you're a real person, by making an automated call to the telephone number you give (with a confirmation code), at least they did on the 3 year free trial.
However, its simple enough, and given you don't have to give out credit card information, about as simple as signing up for any paid hosting service.
Also, do you mean something additionally by "complicated"? Do you mean you feel using the service would be complicated? If so, understand that 1and1 is about on par for complication with other hosting services, and has a pretty easy to understand control panel.
I've never had any problems with it beyond the occasional outage, and even the one time data on my server was damaged they were able to restore it completely from backups.
Once you got your blog up and running (I'd predict using Movable Type or another common and easy to use blogging program) you wouldn't really need to notice 1and1 at all, your interaction would pretty much just be with the blogging software's interface.
