There is a fairly involved quiz on the BBC News site that seeks to determine a person's "Sex Brain Profile"--in other words, where the subject's brain falls on the continuum between masculine and feminine.

You'll need a metric ruler for one part of this test, by the way.

it's long and complicated, and you need a ruler, and knowing your measurements helps. (I haven't gotten all the way through it though they ask some interesting things.) I also wonder if the fact I'm still groggy is going to influence the test.

My results:

Personal Brain Score:

On a continuum, with -100* being the "most female" and 100 being the "most male", I scored -25. The average woman who takes this test has a -50, and the average man who takes it has a +50.

Score for each task:
Angles
My Score: 14/20
Average male score: 16.4
Average female score: 14.7

Explanation: If you scored 13-17 you found this test neither hard nor easy. This suggests your brain has male and female traits when it comes to spatial ability

Spot the Difference
My score: 57%
Average score for men 42%
Average score for women 57%

Explanation: If you socred between 34-66% you may have a balanced female-male brain.

Hands
You said your right thumb ws on top when you clasped your hands together.

This suggests the left half of your brain is dominant.

Emotions and Systems
My empathy score: 16 out of 20
Average male score: 4-12
Average female score 8-15

If you scored 15 or above, you are very empathetic and would be an ideal person to comfort people in a time of crisis.

My systemising score: 14 out of 20
Average male score: 8-16
Average female score: 3-12

A score of 15 and above suggests you're good at analysing or building systems.

Eyes
This task tested your ability to judge people's emotions.
My score: 8 out of 10
Average score 6-9
If you scored 7-10, your result suggests you are a good empathiser, sensitive to other people's emotions. Women generally fall into this category.

Fingers
We asked for the measurements of your ring and index finger. Your ratio came to:
Right hand: .93
Left hand: .98

Average ratio for men: .96
Average ratio for women: 1.00

It's thought that your ratio is governed by the amount of testosterone you were exposed to in your mother's womb. The ratio of the length of your index finger to the length of your ring finger is set for life by as early as three months after conception. Even during puberty, when we experience intensive hormonal changes, the ratio stays the same.

Men generally have a ring finger that is longer than their index finger, which gives them a lower ratio than women, whose ring and index fingers are usually of equal length.

Studies have found that men and women with lots of brothers generally have more masculine ratios.

Faces
Your choice suggests you prefer more masculine faces.

Shapes
This task tested your ability to mentally rotate 3D shapes.

My score: 7 out of 12
Average score for men 8.4
Average score for women: 6.4

If you scored 7-9: In past studies, 50% of the people who scored in this range were women and 50% were men.

Words
You associated 9 words with Grey and you named 7 words that mean happy.

Average score: 6-10 words.

If you produced 6-10 words: Most people in this range have a female-type brain.

Ultimatum
This task asked you how you would divide money.

If someone offered you 50 pounds, you said you would demand 25.

On average, people offer 35-40% of the pot.

[Edit--apparently if there'd been a "properly closing UBB tags section on the test I wouldn't have done well on it. [Smile] ]

They don't seem to use your measurements for anything (chest, waist and hip measurements, that is--they do use the hand measurements). I just gave a wild-ass guess for chest, waist and hip, myself).

Bah, I'm stuck at the measurement question. I guess I need to figure out if there's a ruler nearby.

So far, I didn't do that well on the angles test, but I got all the items in the room right [Smile] .

I scored exactly in the middle. Identity crisis, here I come! I'm amused by the fact I got 100% on the angles, spotting the difference, and the rotating shapes but a mere 4/10 on the faces. Clearly I'm one of those "my face is up here" guys when I talk to women [Wink]

Score for each task:

My Score: 18/20

Average female score: 14.7

Explanation: You have more of a male brain. On average, men outperform women in this task and those with more mathematical knowledge tend to score quite high as well. In past studies, 60 per cent of the people in this range were men.

Spot the Difference
My score: 71%
Average score for men 42%
Average score for women 57%

Hands
You said your right thumb ws on top when you clasped your hands together.

I scored 0 overall. I guess I'm pretty balanced. The notable results:

Angles: 18/20

Spot the difference: 64%

Empathy: 4/20 ( [Roll Eyes] )

Systemising: 12/20

Eyes: 7/10

3D Shapes: 10/12 (I ran out of time, cause I spent too long on the first set)

I can tell the difference in the faces, but neither are attractive to me [Smile]

Overall Performance: +27
Average Male: +50
Average Female: -50

Part 1

Angles
This task tested your ability to identify the angle of a line by matching it with its twin. This is a spatial task, which looks at how you picture space.

Your score: 15 out of 20
Average score for men: 16.4
Average score for women: 14.7

What does your result suggest?

If you scored 13 - 17: You found this test neither hard nor easy. This suggests your brain has male and female traits when it comes to spatial ability.

Spot the difference
This task tested your ability to identify which objects changed position

Your score: 64%
Average score for men: 42%
Average score for women: 57%

What does your score suggest?

If you scored between 34 - 66%: You may have a balanced female-male brain.

Part 2
Hands
You said your LEFT thumb was on top when you clasped your hands together.

Right thumb on top: This suggests the left half of your brain is dominant. Many studies have tried to establish whether there is a relationship between handedness and brain dominance. Some scientists believe that if you are left brain dominant, you would be more verbal and analytical.

Left thumb on top: This suggests the right half of your brain is dominant. Some studies theorise that as a right brain dominant person, you may excel in visual, spatial and intuitive processes.

However, these theories are debatable and leave much to be said about the small percentage of people who are ambidextrous.

Find out why right-brained people may be better fighters and artists.

Part 3

Emotions and Systems
This task looked at whether you prefer to empathise or systemise.

Empathy
Your empathy score is: 11 out of 20
Average score for men: 4 - 12
Average score for women: 8 - 15

What does your result suggest?
Empathisers are better at accurately judging other people's emotions and responding appropriately. If you scored 15 and above, you are very empathic and would be an ideal person to comfort people in a time of crisis. Women in general are better at empathising.

Systemising
Your systemising score is: 17 out of 20
Average score for men: 8 - 16
Average score for women: 3 - 12

What does your result suggest?
Systemisers prefer to investigate how systems work. A system can be a road map, flat pack furniture, or a mathematical equation, anything that follows a set of rules. A score of 15 and above suggests you're good at analysing or building systems. Men in general are better at systemising.

Eyes
This task tested your ability to judge people's emotions.

Your score: 7 out of 10
Average score: 6 - 9

What does your result suggest?

If you scored 0 - 3: Do you think you're good at judging how another person is feeling? Your score suggests this doesn't come to you quite so naturally.

If you scored 4 - 6: Your result suggests you have a balanced female-male brain and find it neither easy nor difficult to judge people's emotions.

If you scored 7 - 10: Your result suggests you are a good empathiser, sensitive to other people's emotions. Women generally fall into this category.

Professor Baron-Cohen at the University of Cambridge says that people usually perform better than they expect to on this test.

Part 4

Fingers
We asked for the measurements of your ring and index finger. Your ratio came to:

Right Hand: 0.97
Left Hand: 0.98

Average ratio for men: .96
Average ratio for women: 1.00
It's thought that your ratio is governed by the amount of testosterone you were exposed to in your mother's womb. The ratio of the length of your index finger to the length of your ring finger is set for life by as early as three months after conception. Even during puberty, when we experience intensive hormonal changes, the ratio stays the same.

Men generally have a ring finger that is longer than their index finger, which gives them a lower ratio than women, whose ring and index fingers are usually of equal length.

Studies have found that men and women with lots of brothers generally have more masculine finger ratios. Find out what other things scientists think our ratios may tell us.

Part 5

Faces
This task looked at how you rate the attractiveness of a series of faces. The images you looked at were digitally altered to create slight differences in masculinity.

Your choices suggest you prefer more masculine faces.

Part 6

3D shapes
This task tested your ability to mentally rotate 3D shapes.

Your score: 12 out of 12
Average score for men: 8.4
Average score for women: 6.4

What does your result suggest?

If you scored 0 - 6: Do you find yourself having to physically rotate a map to point in the direction in which you're travelling? This might explain why you scored in the lower range in the 3D shapes test. Twice as many women as men score in this category. Previous studies suggest that those with a female-type brain or with an arts background fall into this range.

If you scored 7 - 9: In past studies, 50 per cent of the people who scored in this range were women and 50 per cent were men.

If you scored 10 - 12: Are you an engineer or do you have a science background? [hee, hee YES] People with these skills tend to score in this range. Past studies have concluded that people in this range have a more male brain.

Nearly a third of men who took this test got full marks, whereas less than 10 per cent of women managed the same.

Words
This task looked at your verbal fluency.

You associated 14 word(s) with XXX and you named 11 word(s) that mean XXX. We are assuming that all the words you entered are correct. Scientists will be analysing your results in more detail.
[words removed because they were spoilers]

Average score: 6 - 10 words
What do your results suggest?

If you produced 1 - 5 words: You are more of the strong, silent type with a male brain. You probably find it easier to express yourself in non-verbal ways, preferring action rather than words.

If you produced 6 - 10 words: Most people in this range have a female-type brain.

Women are said to use both sides of the brain when doing verbal tasks while men mainly use their left side. Studies have shown that girls develop vocabulary faster than boys. This difference in brain power is caused by levels of pre-natal testosterone.

Ultimatum
This task asked you how you would divide money.

If someone offered you £50, you said you would demand £15.

On average, people offer 35 to 40% of the pot.

Sex differences are small in this task. An offer of more than 40 per cent of the pot (ie £20) is more typically female and an offer of less than 35 per cent of the pot (ie £17.50) is more typically male

I scored 25 to the left of zero (toward the female end of the spectrum.

I thought most of the male faces were pretty hot. [Big Grin]

Angles 17/20
Spot the diff 71%
Left thumb on top
empathy 12/20
systemizing 17/20
eyes 7/10
finger ratio: right 0.94, left 0.95
Faces, preferred masculine (go figure)
3D shapes 9/12. (NOTE: I only answered 9 before time ran out, so I got 100% of the ones I answered. That should mean something).
7 words for GREY/9 words for HAPPY
I said I'd demand 25 pounds. I'd accept 20 pounds.

Heh heh. I only got 25% on the male side of the spectrum, but the only things I scored female on were aptitude tests — how many words I could think of, etc.

So I'm not really unmasculine. I'm just a freakin' genius [Smile]

Brain Score = 0

Angles = 17/20

Spot the difference = 64%

Empathy = 14/20

Systemising = 11/20

Eyes = 8/10

3D = 8/12

Words = 7 for both

I'm firmly in the middle with a preference for feminine faces and a strong empathic bent. This was pretty much in line with what my self-evaluation has always been. It's good to get a second opinion though.

Exactly the average female. Interesting. High in most of the aptitude parts, but a strong preference for masculine faces. I knew I liked scruffy and macho.

Hm. On the rotating one, I thought, "This is super easy".... and only marked one per question.

I didn't read the instructions.

Overall, I'm supposedly the exactly female fifty, but according to what that quiz thing that I didn't do correctly, I supposed I should be a little more male.

Meh.

EDIT: And I was terrible with the words. All I could think of for happpy was two movie quotes;

"I feeel happpyyyy..." from MP and the Holy Grail and
"Felt like I'd never be cheerful again" from HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

*sigh*

Well, if identity crises come from scoring 0, BtL, then I'm in a lot of trouble. I'm not a man! *sigh* But I got +25 overall. Eh, I'll say it's because I scored really high on the angles and rotating and apparently have male finger lengths. Or hey, I'll just blame it on extra testosterone being left over in my mother's womb from her previous pregnancy. Yeeeah, *that* must be it...

Ahhh...heck, why not.

Total brain score: +50

Angles: 20/20
Spot The Difference: 57% (although I figured that I'd gotten enough. If they had told me an approximate number of differences, I would have chosen more.)
Right Thumb on top
Empathy: 12/20
Systemizing: 15/20
Eyes: 8/10 (There were 2 I could go 2 ways on, I think I might have gotten them wrong).
Right hand: 0.92
Left: 0.95
Faces: More feminine
3-d: 12/12
Words: 1 and 1 (I'm pretty sure I screwed up. I didn't read the directions fully. I just typed in a word and then hit enter. I think it would be more like 10 and 14)
Bargaining: I'd take 15

---

Just curious, for male measurements. I think I did mine right. I had a 40 inch chest, 37 inch waist, and 42 inch hips. Does that measure up to what other people got? I'm not sure if I measured right, and I was using a carpenter's metal tape measure, so I don't know if it was exact.

My personal brain score: -100
Average for men: +50
Average for women: -50

Angles
My score: 7/20
Average score for men: 16.4
Average score for women: 14.7

If you scored 0 - 12: You have more of a female brain. Scientists believe that people with a female brain find it more difficult to judge the slope of a line because they're not wired for spatial tasks. In past studies, 65 per cent of people who scored in this range were women.

Spot the difference
My score: 79%
Average score for men: 42%
Average score for women: 57%

If you scored between 67 - 100%: Those with a female-type brain generally score in this range. Your ability to remember where objects are may serve as an advantage to you when you're trying to find your way around places. You're more capable of recalling landmarks to get from one place to another.

Sex differences are small in this task. An offer of more than 40 per cent of the pot (ie £20) is more typically female and an offer of less than 35 per cent of the pot (ie £17.50) is more typically male.

Scientists believe that people with lower testosterone levels tend to take fewer risks so they are probably more willing to keep less for themselves. Those with higher testosterone levels tend to drive a harder bargain and are less compromising.

I was a "dead" 50% female brain, the average female answer.

Angles: 14 out of 20. Ooo, not very good!

Spot the Difference: 100% w00t!

Hands: Left thumb on top suggesting a right brain preference.

Emotions and Systems. This is the category, I think, that kept my brain scoring as feminine as it did.

Empathy: 15 out of 20

Systemizing: 7 out of 20

Eyes: 7 out of 10. I didn't do so well as I thought I would. Anyone else think the *real* right answer was rarely available?

Finger ratio:

Right hand: 1
Left hand: .96

Dude, right hand is straight on average female and left hand is straight on average male!

It says I prefer masculine faces. I had a hard time telling some of them apart, but I was aware that sometime I did choose a more feminine face. It depended on which features were chosen. I wish the answer given were more detailed than just, "You prefer masculine faces". Duh. Which features? How often?

3D shapes: 11 out of 12 w00t! It was challanging, though.

Verbal:

GREY: 11
HAPPY: 10

Ultimatum: Would demand 20 of 50.

Looks like I'm at about a -25. Yay for being a wimmin but not a whole lot! I think that the result just means that I'm smart in a lot of different things. (nods)

Detailed results:

Angles: 15 out of 20

You found this test neither hard nor easy. This suggests your brain has male and female traits when it comes to spatial ability.

Spot the difference: 86%

Those with a female-type brain generally score in this range. Your ability to remember where objects are may serve as an advantage to you when you're trying to find your way around places. You're more capable of recalling landmarks to get from one place to another.

Hands: You said your RIGHT thumb was on top when you clasped your hands together. This suggests the left half of your brain is dominant. Many studies have tried to establish whether there is a relationship between handedness and brain dominance. Some scientists believe that if you are left brain dominant, you would be more verbal and analytical.

Emotions and Systems: Empathy: 9 out of 20
Systemising: 6 out of 20

Eyes: Your score: 8 out of 10
Average score: 6 - 9

Your result suggests you are a good empathiser, sensitive to other people's emotions. Women generally fall into this category.

Fingers: Right Hand: 1.02
Left Hand: 1.01

Faces: Your choices suggest you prefer more masculine faces.

Highly masculinised male faces possess more extreme testosterone markers such as a long, broad and lower jaw, as well as more pronounced brow ridges and cheekbones.

Interestingly, women's preferences are said to vary across the menstrual phase. A more masculine face is preferred during the 9 days prior to ovulation, when conception is most likely.

A typical 'attractive' female face possesses features such as a shorter, narrower, lower jaw, fuller lips and larger eyes than an average face.

Are you surprised at what researchers think they can learn from your answers? Find out more.

3D shapes: Your score: 11 out of 12
Average score for men: 8.4
Average score for women: 6.4

Are you an engineer or do you have a science background? (Nope, I'm an artist) People with these skills tend to score in this range. Past studies have concluded that people in this range have a more male brain.

Words: You associated 21 word(s) with GREY and you named 12 word(s) that mean happy. We are assuming that all the words you entered are correct. (They weren't) Scientists will be analysing your results in more detail.

Average score: 6 - 10 words

Most people in this range have a female-type brain.

Ultimatum: If someone offered you £50, you said you would demand £20.

Wow. I was +25. I would have labeled myself as an artsy, flibbertigibbety, Marianne Dashwood type. I do have crazy map skillz though, and scored very high on the angles and 3-D shapes. But I also scored off the charts on words.

More proof that I don't know what the heck I am.

The only scores on this we've seen have been 100, 50, 25, 0, -25, -50, and -100 right. So not as big of a variation as it leads on. (just saying, not really thinking anything)

I thought mine was in-between 25 and 30, but I was just eyeballing it so it was probably 25 not 27 like above. I wonder if there is a +/-75 spot.

I don't think I could take it now that I've read all your results. Because if I take it I will be thinking of what each action means, and it will probably affect my individual performance (like clasping my hands together - will I accidentally put a certain thumb on top because I know how the test is going to evaluate it?????

FG, I saw that people were starting to explain and didn't read any more until I'd taken it. Maybe there should be a warning about that in the first post.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel a sense of . . . wrongness, I guess, if I clasp my hands together with the right thumb on top. It's just natural for me to have the left thumb on top.

Wow. I have a much more masculine brain than I thought. And I've always told people that I have crap spatial skills, but on these tests I was off the charts for men and women's scores...

So why do I have no sense of direction?

Anyway, it was an interesting test.

What kicked me down from being more female was my interest in how stuff works. I get that from my dad. [Big Grin]

I would offer 25, but would accept 20.

I've never felt exactly masculine, but I've never really felt especially feminine, either. I think it's a fairly accurate reflection.
