We had our traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner tonight. One night early, since we had a guest who totally digs corned beef. But now we can eat leftovers on St. Patty's. (Not that there is much meat left.) [Razz]

In my family, the corned beef is bought while it's on sale, but put in the freezer for later consumption; my dad started that the year he learned to make colcannon. We've never gone back. [Smile]

We do wear green. My grandmother was from England, but her parents were from Ireland and she lived in the Irish part of Liverpool, so...

Corned beef and cabbage is one of my most-favorite meals, and I usually only get it this one time a year. Our company cafeteria usually offers it each St. Patrick's day.

So I come into work today, check the intranet for menu-of-the-day and they are having..... tuna noodle casserole! What kind of blasphemy is this!! I'm so disappointed...

Am I the only person of Irish descent who finds corned beef and cabbage disgusting? Maybe I just had it too many times growing up. Stringy meat, soggy veggies, bleh.

By the way, ketchupqueen, your dinner sounds fabulous and if I lived anywhere near you I'd be at your door...I love colcannon! And soda bread..

I grew up in Vermont and every St. Patricks day we'd watch the St. Patrick Day parade in NYC on WPIX. Then we'd watch "The Quiet Man" that evening (after the stringy corned beef and soggy cabbage!)

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

ctm, my corned beef is never stringy, and while the veggies do get soft, thet never get overcooked or bitter, and are very flavorful. So there. [Razz] [Wink]

But he is the patron saint of Ireland. Which is traditionally a very Catholic country.

Poem my younger brother and I collaborated on some 27-28 years ago:

The Irish color is green
And it is really keen
Saint Patrick drove the snakes away
That's why we celebrate this day
March 17th is Saint Patrick's Day
So we all celebrate his way
Green is keen
The color of a bean
Green is seen in lots of spots
Once I saw a shamrock on top of a clock

<Takes bow.>

Some good reads on Pat (who was a slave of the Irish before he left, became a priest, and answered the call he heard to return to Ireland and minister to the pagans . . .)

Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland

or
The Deer's Cry

For some general Celtic information:

Who Were the Celts?

And of course, there are tons more places to find interesting tidbits of info . . .

Slainte!

You know, being a Maritimer you'd think I'd be all about this holiday. But, for the life of me, I can't remember anyone really caring about it back home. Maybe I was just too young to appreciate the festivities.

Now January 25th, that's a holiday worth celebrating [Smile]

Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.

Hardly anyone around here seems to care, either. But where I grew up, it was big.

Maybe it's 'cause Texans have egos as big as the Irish to begin with. [Razz]

Some good reads by Pat (The Patron Saint of Galactic Cactus)

He sucks

Loved by the medical community

Dashingly handsome

Twists balloons in his spare time.

Will now hear your prayers.
