Has anyone else here gotten (or considered getting) one of the cellphones with parental controls for their kids?
My oldest has a Firefly, and we're pretty happy with it so far. I like being able to limit her incoming and outgoing calls to only those numbers I have programmed in. She says it's easy to use, and the sound quality is good.
A similar option is the TicTalk. Being able to program in online sounds nice (Firefly's method of entering numbers is a pain in the neck and regions lower ), but I think the Firefly is cooler looking.

I did, too. It came, but I'd put the wrong shipping address, so I had to pick it up from UPS. It took almost THIRTY MINUTES.
The girl finally came back from the warehouse holding four different boxes, and then didn't want to serve me next because I saw which one was mine and pointed it out. I was next in line, but I think she thought I was cutting, so she tried to brush me off. The guy she tried to serve instead, however, said that he had come last and that I was ahead of him, which was sweet. All in all, NOT a good experience at the UPS place.

rivka, I liked the original title of this thread too.
But anyway. I have toyed with the idea of getting my son a cellphone, but just couldn't justify it. And given how fritterheaded he is, I suspect it would be lost pretty quickly. (I probably don't give him enough credit. He's not quite as spacy as he used to be and he's getting better about not losing things.)
What do you find you use it for? I'm curious because we're only now getting to the point he does a lot of stuff without us, and so there's transportation issues. Mostly it's us needing to get ahold of him, not the other 'way round. And so far it hasn't really been a serious pain he didn't have a phone. We do use walkee talkees quite a bit, but that was just on vacation and when he's out in the neighborhood.

I am torn between hysterical laughter and annoyance that some people don't read the OP.

I don't know that I would have bought one either. I got this one free (I'm a BzzAgent). But it's useful when I send her on errands nearby (we don't have walkie-talkies, although I have considered it) and she needs to call home (like this morning when the store didn't have the size pans I wanted). It's also useful for transportation issues, as you mentioned.
And last month, before we got this, I had a terrible time trying to reach her when she was at a friend's house for a party. I guess when there are 30 pre-teen girls there, it makes sense that the household would be a bit topsy-turvy.
But mostly, I want her to have it as a just-in-case. It has my numbers, her dad's numbers, her grandparents' numbers, her aunts' and uncles' numbers . . . And she's very good about keeping track of things that are important, at least in the last 6 months or so. And we talked at length before I gave it to her about what one of these costs and where the replacement cost might come from if she did lose it.
Having used it a bit, I think if I did have to pay for it (and I think that in three months we have to send it back or buy it, but I have to check on that), I probably would.

*grin* I read it. I've been a flippant mood lately, though, and thought I'd tease. I'm sorry - I have nothing to contribute to the current discussion, having neither children nor a desire for a phone with no number buttons.

That BzzAgent site is very interesting. I'm tempted.
And its premise worked on this item because I'm tempted to try it too. I saw the Firefly on Amazon yesterday, when I ordered the Firefly DVDs, but didn't know what it was for. Now I know. It never occurred to me to wonder if there was a parental control version of phones. Very cool. I'll have to look into it further...it may well be worth it for us.

Sadly, they didn't give us any coupons to distribute on this one.
jeni, if you do sign up as a BzzAgent, I think there's a way to indicate that I referred you. I use the same email that's in my profile.

I signed up as a BzzAgent, but there wasn't a place to put your email as the person who referred me. I think you have to send out invitations. (Bzz a friend)

I signed up already. I didn't realize you could Bzz me until it was all done. Although, if you'd like, I can delete my account and let you Bzz me, then sign up again. Do you get points for it?
