I am playing a MMORPG set in space and I am basing my character on Mal from Firefly.

In my discussions, I want to imitate Mal as much as I can until someone notices. Can anyone remember any quotes he said and post em here?

It would be even better if I could find the scripts to the episodes in html format. I have them in PDF, but I can't copy/paste. [Razz]

Ahh, we are having copywrite issues now, so I don't think they will allow this.

Sorry.

Scripts would definitely be a no-no.

Individual quotations are definitely okay, as far as the law goes.

OK, I understand.

Do you think it is ok to post where we can view scripts?

Legally? Likely, at least in the nobody would get sued sense.

However, it would be in very bad taste (unless those scripts were clearly being made available by the copyright holder or under a license from the copyright holder), and I'm pretty certain the mods would not approve.

That is what I don't understand. It seems you can search for movie scripts and TV show scripts and they are VERY available.

Because it is so easy to find, I kinda thought they were made open to the public. If they were being traded via p2p, I could see why it is illegal.

Websites are very open, especially some of the script websites. If they fringed on copyright laws, I would think they would have been taken down. Does anyone know (thinking Dagonee) if these sites are legal or not?

Unless explicit permission has been given by the copyright holder, they are infringing that copyright holder's copyright, most definitely, no doubt. This is illegal, in this case in a civil sense (that is, the police don't care, but the copyright holder could bring a lawsuit).

Whether or not the copyright holder cares is another matter entirely; I suspect most copyright holders for TV shows don't care. Having the scripts out there only keeps interest in their shows high. However, either through also not caring or on the advice of their lawyers, these same copyright holders have likely not given anyone an actual license to make the scripts available.

This means that if, for whatever reason, they wished to squash an instance of the script being shared, they could, easily. They'd send a notice to the ISP, as specified in the DMCA, and in the bizarre off chance the ISP did not deal with it, they'd sue the ISP and the person sharing.

Oh, and unless you see a license, or have a good reason to suspect one (such as a known business relationship between the party with the copyright and the party you think is licensing), don't assume one.

People infringe copyright all over the freakin' place.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the Firefly scripts are posted on the official Firefly site, though. So wouldn't that imply permission from the copyright holder?

No, that would merely imply the firefly site is permitted to post them.

However, it would be completely legally acceptable to link to those scripts on the firefly official site, here, as the firefly official site has them (and is reasonably presumed to have the right to post them).

If the firefly official site has language that allows reposting of the scripts, then linking to other sites would be legally okay (but before doing so, for peace of mind, one should link the language here).

Is it me, or is the whole board overly paranoid about copyright infringement right now?

Good. I'd hate to be paranoid about everybody else being paranoid.

So long as that wasn't a public performance, singing the song is protected [Razz]
