May we also record songs which are not public domain, but which we have the permission of the copyright holder to use? Posts: 21182 | Registered: Sep 2004

As I said on the reading to each other thread, I can't record anything yet b/c of lack of computer, but I'd love to hear anything anyone else has to share.

Anyone have any links to good books of French art songs? Or, for that matter, any French PD songs?

Another question, do the acapella songs have to be folk? or can they be any kind if music? I write a lot of music lyrics (and some actual music to go with them, but not much), but it's rarely folk or anything close to folk.

Public Domain menas that on one currently holds a copyright to it, meaning usually meaning that the copyright has expired or has lapsed in some way.
As they have entered teh "public domain", anyone can record them or use them without ezpress permission of the person who holds the copyright....As they are no loger covered by copyright law.
In english, it means that no one can sue OSC for allowing us to host recordings of them here at Hatrack.....
Public Domain means that no one is going to sue you if you sing the song; that it's available for everyone to use; that it is not copyrighted. It is not an obscure music genre .
This means you may record any songs written before 1923, which may include folk songs, classical music and early 20th century stuff. I don't know what else is, but presumably things like National Anthems are in the public domain.

Yep, if its in the public domain you can just about do whatever you want with it. Note that this does not mean what someone else does with it is in the public domain.
For instance, a Souza march as originally penned is in the public domain, but --
For a particular printing of that march, the presentation is copyrighted (assuming its recent enough), so while you can play it using that sheet music for whatever purposes you want, you can't reproduce that sheet music.
If someone arranges the march, that arrangement has copyright on it, so you can't play it (or whatever) without a license.
If someone performs the work that performance is copyrighted, so you can't distribute a recording of it (without a license, of course).
In many countries other than the US, there are additional rights beyond copyright that still apply to public domain works, called moral rights. In those nations it might be illegal to, for instance, utilize a Souza march to make fun of the united states, assuming the creator or someone with an authority to argue on his behalf (typically an estate) objected. These are rarely enforced, though, and usually only in very extreme, often profane cases.

I'm asking why Teshi isn't on aim, kwea, when she seems to be online (though she may have just gone to bed).

Anyone know of a place/way where I could post songs then? I don't have my own website to upload MP3s onto. Is there anything quick and easy I could do?

My voice is still iffy, but I recorded anyway. It's not my best work, but anyone who wishes to hear it may e-mail me for me singing "Be Thou My Vision".
I will give my voice a little rest and then see if I can't do something else decently. Posts: 21182 | Registered: Sep 2004

Voice still not quite right, but getting better.
I've recorded "Shenandoah", which I sing to my daughter for a lullabye; once I put the entire waiting room at her clinic to sleep. Posts: 21182 | Registered: Sep 2004

I've got "Annie Laurie", which I think is the most beautiful love song in the English language, and which I in no way do justice to. E-mail if you want it.

What, no one else wants to sing? And Teshi is the only one who wants to hear? I know I'm not great, but I'm not that bad. Posts: 21182 | Registered: Sep 2004

I got them! I especially like Shenandoah- very soothing, I can imagine you could put a roomful to sleep with this.
I like your voice in the higher register best- it's very pretty and pure up there! I can hear it especially in the highest parts of 'Be Thou My Vision'.

Can I be on the list of people receiving singin' stuff? I don't know how to send and record myself. Though I am willing....

kq, did you find because of your cold you had to switch your voice and sing with a more airy tone? Is that what you mean?

No, I actually am hoarse from reading so much yesterday. I had trouble switching smoothly between head and chest tone, and I had to stick to the middle of my range-- nothing on the really high end of what I can sing, and nothing really low. (I have an almost-three-octave range when I'm in good voice.) I was having voice control issues-- more wavering than usual-- and and some volume problems, especially on the higher notes. But I didn't freak out too much, especially since I was using my "folk singing" voice, not my "trained" voice (that I use in choirs, etc.)

"Choir tone" is not on the agenda until my throat is fully better, since it hurts if I use it when I'm not healthy-throated, and so I only sing through a cold, allergies, or sore throat if we have a performance. But when I'm better, I'll be happy to.

Seriously, though, I though your head tone was very pretty and that maybe you had been singing the songs a bit low for your voice.

quote: And is that a hint of a Texan accent I hear there?
No! NO NO NO NO NO! I am a Californian! I do not have an accent! My grandfather on my dad's side and my mom's family were "Okies", though. We've always sung with a bit of a twang on some songs.
*bangs head in frustration* I AM NOT A TEXAN!
As for what you could sing, hymns are always good. So are folk songs, old jazz standards, kids' songs... There are many resources given in the other thread we talked about this in-- here. Not knowing your voice, I don't know what to recommend.

You can send me Annie Laurie. I'm curious about the best english language song ever, and about the accent argument =)

Wow, I am so glad you guys got me to do this! I am loving having audacity on my computer and playing with it. I realized I can sing harmony with myself!
I am also wondering what happened to KQ and Teshi.
Anyway, to both of you I am sending a version of Greensleeves with a descant I wrote for it when Porter and I were playing it together. Maybe at some point Porter and I will record some of our bluegrass songs--or at least a duet of some sort.

Eruve, I didn't know how to do it until today. Do you have a microphone? If you do, all you need to do is download "Audacity" which is free. You might also need to download LAME, a free mp3 encoder, so that you can turn them into mp3s. Otherwise, someone would need to have Audacity on their puter in order to read your file.

beverly- I think I might actually have a microphone somewhere, it might be too old to plug into this PC though. I'll try the program, thanks!
