I specifically checked. Thnderbird stores messages uncompressed, as raw files. Normal english ASCII messages can be read by Word. It however stores messages with headers and other information, so it may be not so easy to read them, and places all messages in folder in on big file. But there was no effort to hide them.
It is not clear which features OSC wanted here.
