I was trying to connect my new laptop (*squee!*) to the desktop, so I was messing with networking stuff. And now our internet doesn't work, and we can't figure out how to get it back. [Embarrassed] We can see that it's connected by unplugging and plugging the cable back in, but when we load Firefox, it can't find anything. So I have no idea what I did, and I vow to never again mess with computer settings unless I know *exactly* what I'm doing.

Maybe you accidentally hacked into the Matrix and no longer need the interent, but you can connect mentally. Either way, (((Eruve)))

Hmm... if you tell us a little more about whats wrong with it, we could probably tell you how to fix it [Smile]

So what did you do? How were you trying to set it up? What kind of connection and where? Is it just your laptop that can't connect or all the computers? Do you use a router of some kind, or connect directly to the modem? Is it wireless or ethernet?

I have quite a bit of experience with networks breaking from LAN parties... I could probably help.

Edit: darn it, I have to go to school now, won't have access to a computer again till this afternoon. Well, if you haven't fixed it already by then, I'll see if I can help. There are many more computer capable people on this forum, many of them more so than me. So answer those questions and one of them (*looks for fugu*) can probably tell you what to do [Wink]

My brother is going to try to come over and fix it tonight. He's the technical one, but I still don't think he knows how to fix it.

We have cable internet, and it's under the "LAN or high-speed internet connection". I was trying to use the connection setup wizard to set up a network to the laptop, because I didn't think it was working on LAN 2 (the one we use for hooking up my Dad's laptop). I must have changed a setting on it, because it's sstill there, it just doesn't work. When I was doing the setup wizard, it did some kind of a search for current settings or connections, and then my virus protection popped up with a message saying it found a new connection. Naturally, I thought it saw my computer, so I gave it access, and labled it. I also tried messing with some of the connections on LAN and LAN 2 (LAN is the internet connection), so I don't know what I did. [Embarrassed] LAN is connected and enabled, but when we try to open Firefox, it says the homepage isn't found.

Any help would be nice, though you probably don't have enough information to be able to tell what's wrong. We'll probably end up calling the cable company anyway.

Yeah, I can't tell what to do from what you just told me.

I'd have to be sitting in front of the computer and be able to try some things.

Still, with a little more info, I may be able to suggest some things for you to try. Is the connection you are trying to use wireless or hardwired (ethernet)? What kind of hub or wireless router do you have (if you're cable, then you need some kind of LAN hub or router, if you're wireless you'd need a wireless router)?

My brother got it to work last night. We ended up re-installing the internet software as a desperate thought, and it worked. [Smile]

YAY! *hugs internet* [Big Grin]
