My brother and I were trying to network two computers so that we could play a game using a network cable. However, the game said that IPX was not available on one of the computers. It has worked in the past and the computer said it was working properly. We tried using it as a host and having it join an existing game, but nothing worked. The computer in question has an internal: D-link Express EtherNetwork DFE-530TX+ 10/100 mbps card. Any suggestions on what can be done?

I don't know what any of those are, so I've got nothing. Sorry.

Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the driver and/or the card itself from the device manager?

No, it's my parents' computer, so we didn't want to do anything drastic if it's avoidable.

Is this Windows XP? Which game are you trying to play?

Stop. Don't delete anything. Don't reinstall any drivers.

What you need to do is install the Novell IPX protocol. I hope you're using a version of windows because if so it's not that hard.

I have 2000 in front of me so I'm going to give you step by step for that. But it's not THAT different for other versions of windows.

1> Right click on My Network Places and go to properties.
2> Double click Local Area Network
3> Properties
4> Install
5> Protocol
6> NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatable yada yada yada. I believe in other versions of windows it just says "IPX/SPX"
7> Click OK and Close out the remaining windows.

Do this on both machines you wish to network up and you're good to go.

Jeff says it's Windows ME. He'll see if that works tomorrow. Thanks. [Smile]

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention, Microsoft wrote a version of the Novell IPX drivers so under the catagory of protocol, it will be under Microsoft, not Novell.

You'll see when you get there.

the ME installation is a bit different. I can't remember it off hand. But installing the IPX protocols should fix things [Smile]

Thanks, we figured it out. We didn't have a My Network Places link, but we did get there. We had to match up some numbers in the options section of the game. Thanks again, everyone.
