Neck.

I wouldn't mind so much if the management would get their heads on straight. I'll explain. 4 weeks ago, I submitted a schedule change form so I could work part time and go to school. If it weren't for the fact that this is Walmart, everything probably would have gone smoothly. The problem is, about a week ago I found out that the form was stuck on the bottom of a pile of papers in the personel office. As such, the guy in charge of actually putting the change into the computer never actually saw it. Result, The change did not go into affect and I had to sit next to the personel manager as he put the correct information into the computer. Problem solved, right? Not in this man's Walmart. Today the schedule that covers the first week of school was posted. I aparently am scheduled to work 40 hours the first week of school. All the days I'm working are the days I put down as not being available for work under any circumstance. And the days I have off, yeah. Those are the days I put down as being able to work (since all my classes fall on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I asked for those days off so I could go to school and do homework. I scheduled myself for 6 hours on Tuesday and Thursday, plus 8 hours on Saturday and every other Sunday. More than enough for a good paycheck to live on). So now I have three choices. Quit working and just go to school (And be extremely poor), quit school and just go to work (And be extremely poor for the rest of my life), or spend another day dealing with management to try and fix this problem...again...with no real guarantee that it will do anything permanent (In other words, I might end up having another 40 hour work week during school that I have to re-work the schedule for, which again won't guarantee a permanent change). Okay, so the second option is just stupid and I'm not even remotely considering it. But right now, options 1 and 3 are looking to be about equal on the hastle-ometer. This is one of the reasons I've always worked for smaller businesses.

Ouch. Hang in there. Keep copies and notes. Keep your temper . . . (grin)

On the other hand, what are the possibilities of paid internships, work-study, campus jobs?

In my college experience, even washing dishes and scrubbing toilets paid quite a bit more as a part-time student employee for the college than working in the "real world" - and came with percs like managers understanding and working with students around school schedules . . .

My suggestion would be to find another employer. Unless you love the 'Mart too much to part ways.

School is more important than a retail job. This schedule conflict is not at all your fault. Tell your manager this and simply "I am not going to work the hours that conflict with my schedule, you can straighten this out with personnel or you can fire me for not working hours I've already informed them I couldn't work."

Don't let them waste too much of your time fixing it, either. You did your job submitting the form. Personnel didn't do their job, and managements job is ironing out the problem that caused.

Unless you're doing it on the clock at a time that you don't mind working. Then, why not? [Big Grin]

Seriously, you did your part. You gave them sufficient warning. That they didn't find it at the bottom of a mound of papers is is hardly your fault. They need to get their act together.

Incredibly good point, quid. Waste as much time with their idiocy as you like, as long as they're paying you for the time being wasted.

I work at Sam's Club when I'm not at school. Luckily, I haven't had a problem with requesting leave of absences.

[Big Grin] I always saw it that way. Why shouldn't they pay? But then, I'm just a little meanie. . .

Seriously, though, I was the human resources manager at one point in time, as well as chief accountant, and there is NO WAY I would ever let my inbox get that far behind. Several times a day, I would go through my inbox looking for anything urgent, and sorting everything else that didn't need my immediate attention. I ALWAYS met my deadlines, despite doing the job of three or four people. If that yahoo in that office is that muddled, then he either needs to learn organizational skills, or he needs to be fired.

I echo quid and Enigmatic's posts and further advise you to let your department head know what's going on. Personnel doesn't always tell the departments what's going on. Who am I kidding? Personnel never keeps the dept heads in the loop. [Smile]

Remember, I was part of WalCult, I've been there. Document everything and keep them informed if you will not be at work. It would be great (but unexpected) if you could get them to sign something that recognizes you told them the days you would not be attending work due to schedule conflicts with school.

Do your best, and I'm pulling for ya! Remember, once you graduate, you won't have to work there anymore. [Smile]

As an English major, I can say this might not be 100% true [Razz]

Are you a freshman? If not, try checking with the tutoring center at your school to see if you can get employment with them helping other students with their papers or any other subject that you're good at- it's an easy job and looks very nice on a resume. On-campus jobs in general are pretty good.

Another idea would be to look for a place off-campus that typically employees a lot of college students - they're a lot more flexible about these type of things. Restaurants near campus can be a good place.
