For those who wonder if there is a dog, here's evidence of dog's absence:

- Utter silence as you watch squirrels run right by the back screen door

- Plate scraps go right into the trash untouched

- A feeling that your best friend's missing

- Don't need to vacuum the rug for weeks on end

- No weird musty smell after it rains

Clean feet after running heedlessly through the yard.

No brown spots in the lawn surrounded by exceptionally thick, nitrogen-rich grass.

Objects that would fit in a dog's mouth, which are left within three feet of the ground, are where you left them and are not covered with slime.

Insouciant cats saunter into and out of your yard with godlike aplomb.

No heavy weight on your legs while you sleep, but you wake up sometimes with cold feet.

No slobber on your hands and face (also evidence of absence of a toddler).

Confident mail carriers striding shamelessly right to your front door.

Feelings of unexplained doglessness, or of unexplained catfulness.

Being overwhelmed by meaninglessness and ennui when encountering lint brushes.

Carpet utterly free of hair, despite not having been vacuumed in the last 10 minutes.

Meals eaten in complete confidence that, should you need to get up and refill your glass of milk, your spaghetti will remain untouched until you return.

Lack of huge brown eyes that say, "Hey, can I have some of that?"

Absence of cute, curled-up sleepers on the giant round pillow in the living room.
