Ok,
My sister just asked me if I can give the blessing before the meal at her wedding reception on Saturday. The minister was going to do it...but it turns out he can't come to the reception.

I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about giving a blessing at a wedding reception, so I can think of what to say. Is it like a normal meal blessing (ie: thanking God for brining everyone together, and asking him to bless the food that we are about to eat) or should it be more about the couple...or a bit of both. Also, do you know around how long they usually are.

I have not been to a wedding in years, so I can't remember what others have done...so I'm trying to figure something out in the next day or so.

I tried google, but for the most part all I found was the same article saying how either the minister, a family member or MC should give the blessing and that the person should be told ahead of time so they could put of "personal touch" to it. Of course they don't give advice to the actuall blesser. [Razz]

thx

Not too long. Much like any other meal blessing, but it would be appropriate also to give thanks for the happy occaision, the love of the couple and their family and friends, the opportunity to share in their joy, etc.

I ask my husband to give me blessings all the time. [Smile] He usually just says whatever he's inspired to. And we pray about everything while we're blessing the food; we just throw in whatever we're feeling. So maybe I can help. [Smile]

I'll tell you what I would like to hear in a blessing before a wedding reception:

"may they be surrounded and strengthened by the love of others"

"may they grow ever closer to each other as they grow individually, and hold to each other through good times and bad"

"may they grow closer to Thee as they learn the depths of their love for each other"

as well as thanks for family and friends being there to celebrate this joyous event, a prayer that all stay safe and well and travel home in safety, and close with a repeated wish that the bride and groom be happy together. Oh, and don't forget to give thanks for and bless the food. [Wink]

That's sounds really nice, KQ. I hope someone says something like that at my wedding.

(no, rivka, no plans yet!)

The one I want at my reception, from the movie "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne:

May their days be long, and full of happiness.
May their children be many, and full of health.
And may they live in peace, and freedom.
