These are some GREAT musicians at the church where Dana is pastor. There's a Sunday night "contemporary service" and the guy who plays drums really wants to play bass. Whereas, for me, the only instrument worth anything is the drum, and the only thing to be done with any instrument is turn it into a drum.
Tonight I was a bit tentative because I only knew a couple of the songs and I didn't want to run right through the breaks or time changes. But it was still a HUGE amount of fun. They seemed to think I did okay. I flubbed a couple of things. One time, my foot went off on a beat all it's own. Sort of spastically marching to the beat of a different drummer somewhere not even in the same room. I stared it into submission.
The second time, I tried something fancy and lost the beat, but the other musicians were very much able to just keep on playing. They're not just good, they're VERY good.
And they were so kind to let me play completely cold.
I loved it!
Next week, we'll get together and practice. Yippee!

Can I just say, Bob, that I'm intensely jealous, having wanted to play drums since, oh, about second grade. However, when I started to take music lessons in the fourth grade and my parents took me to pick out my instrument, they saw a clarinet and said, "That looks harmless." Really. I learned to make it squeak horribly, just to get a little revenge. However, I did learn, in the sixth grade, that if I left my clarinet home on band class days the teacher would let me play the bass drum. Guess who managed to forget their clarinet quite frequently from then on.

lma -- you're parents' reaction is all too typical. Drums can be noisy, but there are so many ways to quietly practice the drums. And, really, drumming and vocals are the two musical forms that have the longest and most varied history. They are universal.
The good thing is that you can start formal drum training at any age. I'm betting you've been drumming in your head all the time anyway. Just learning to make your hands and feet do what your brain is hearing -- that's all it takes.
I suggest going to a local "world goods" store and finding a hand drum that you like the sound of. You can play along with favorite songs or just try interesting beats to your hearts content.
I have this idea of someday passing out hand drums to the evening congregation for some communal drumming. We'll see. First I have to learn the songs the group plays. They really are great musicians and I think I'm going to enjoy this.

Bob, more reason for you to come to Grassroots some day: the drum circle.
It goes all night, and it is really incredible. You feel so...tribal.
My friend was visiting this week, and she can play the guitar a little. My son taught her a few chords, and he jammed with her. I picked up the recorder, because my clarinet is in need of repair, and it felt so darn good.

I wanted SO bad to play drums when I was in grade school and they had us pick out what instrument we would play in band. However, I was told "girls don't play drums" and forbidden from doing so. So I ended up with flute (which two years later, I switched to baritone horn for many many years).
But in the end, I got my revenge. I own my own drum set now! And I can play whenever I want!

Sounds like this will be a fun group for you -- congratulations and yay! Sophie and I play the bodhrin together I love drums, although I'm not as keen on the drum set for some reason. We ended up starting a music class this weekend and I determined that I needed to go around with a little egg shaker/moroccas all the time because it was just that fun.

He did great. I couldn't believe it, since he didn't know the songs and (as far as I know) hasn't actually played drums since college, but he was incredible. A little quiet on the first verse until he picked it up, but then Wow!
And I'm not at all prejudiced on this. Nope.
