Someone had to say it. It's gotten a bit silly, even for Stargate. SG-1 is totally broken up, and we are introduced to yet another Evil Alien Race (tm).
I mourn.
I hear SGA is pretty good, but it's just not the same.

SGA is spectacular. My roomate and I watched it nonstop last year in residence, and now we are eagerly downloading every new episode each week they come out.

I think as soon as Richard Dean Anderson announced he was leaving, everyone knew the show was lining up it's run to jump the shark.
SGA is very good I think. I haven't watched every single episode, but the ones I've seen are very good.

See, I personally really like the temporary female replacement. It's a bit racier (if you can even call it that) than SG-1 normally is. And it's not really like the show was ever un-silly, as you mentioned.
SGA is... well... fun, I guess. I don't really watch the Stargates for television fulfillment, more for the fact that they're easy watching. I don't really need to think when I'm watching them, unless I'm trying to remember how the mythology actually goes

I was extremely worried about S9, what with two cast members leaving (one only temporarily), four joining the crew, and a new alien species. Yet it has so far exceeded my expectations.
The Ori fit in with the previous mythology and add a new dimension to the 'false gods' theme. Colonel Mitchell is not trying to be a carbon copy of O'Neill. Vala is more than entertaining enough to make up for any additional silliness.
So far, S9 is better than the majority of S8. In many ways, it's a different show. Instead of trying to continue the old plotlines and formulas (which bogged down S8), they're taking the world of Stargate and heading in a new direction. Much to my surprise, I like it. So hands off.

I have enjoyed myself. It was always meant to be light and fun. I would rather forgo all of the Farscape ties myself. I am growing increasingly bored with all of the Farscape fans coming on board now. If I have to hear "its not as good as Farscape" again I will have to go postal on somebody.
Enjoy it for what it is. If its not for you, shut up and don't watch!
Maybe thats a bit harsh for this particular thread, but I needed an outlet.

I disagree. I think Star Trek: The Next Generation ended at its peak (season seven). Deep Space Nine did pretty well; I wouldn't say it actually jumped the shark, but it didn't maintain its integrity quite like TNG did.

ST:TNG jumped the shark when Brent Spiner threatened to leave if they didn't give him more interesting roles to play (IIRC, between seasons 5 and 6).

So giving a character more intersting roles constitutes jumping the shark? If you didn't know that bit of behind-the-scenes trivia, would you have noticed a different on the show?

I really hated the later TNG episodes featuring ensign Roe. And yet, Major Kira is one of my favorite trek characters. Go figure.
DS9's last two seasons was excellent drama. However, with the entire focus on the Dominon Wars, DS9 kind of lost the sense of wonder and exploration one usually associates with Star Trek.

No no NO! Ben Browder and Claudia Black jumped the shark!
I didn't really like SG-1 until this happened. SGA was good for the first half of the first season and then died quickly. No wonder Sci-Fi cuts the seasons in half, They don't want you to remember how good it was before.

No, that doesn't constitute jumping the shark.
But with ST:TNG, that's when it happened.
Yes, I would have noticed it.
Do you remember the episode with Worf and Alexander on the holodeck where everbody else was Data? :shudder:

As I think about it, I realize that the way I watched the different seasons has made a big difference in how I view them.
I watched the first five seasons in junior high and high school. I watched it pretty faithfully and loved it.
Then I went off to college. It was close to ten years before I got to see those last two seasons in syndication.
Honestly, a lot of the ST:TNG episodes throughout the entire show were pretty lame. But it's easy to forgive them because I loved them so much when I was younger.
You know -- the same thing we do with A New Hope.

Ya know, I used to HATE Stargate SG1. Stupid acting and plots and stuff... Give me Babylon 5 any day! But SG1 slowly grew on me... didn't want it to.. but a few times I was stuck watching a few marathons...and it's been on for so long that I finally saw enough episodes to get me involved with the characters and the races.
Who knew that SG1 would have survived so long! I think the Farscape people joining the show is a cool idea.
As for SG Atlantis... most of last season was REALLY dumb. This new season is a little better. I can't wait till both plotlines finally join up. That will be REALLY cool.
Like...really.

A lot of TNG was lame, but it was the first of a new generation of Trek, I give it a break. It set the stage for pretty much everything that came after it. Many agree that Picard is still the best captain, though personally the Defiant is still my favorite ship.
DS9 is my favorite series. I love the characters, the mix of comedy and action. Obviously it loses it's sense of "adventure," they knew they were losing that when they set the series on a fixed point in space on a space station. They were never meant to explore like TNG was. I thought the war was very good, and the space battles were some of the sweetest in sci fi at the time.
Bashir and Chief O'Brian, and sometimes Garak were a great storyline, as was Odo and Quark. Every character seemed to have a special kind of relationship with every other character, which made mixing and matching very rich in terms of story arcs and character development.
As for Stargate, I haven't seen past Season 4. I'm slowly getting through them, but I'm borrowing the DVDs from a friend, so it's a slow process.

I'm enjoying this new season of Stargate SG-1 ALOT.
Ben Browder has been really good in it and Claudia Black has been alot of fun. I'll miss her when she leaves. She's a lot more interesting, imo, then Carter. I wish they'd keep Claudia and let Carter go. lol.
I think Black has excellent chemistry with Ben and Micheal Shanks! Its been fun to watch those three on SG-1.
Speaking of Shanks, he has been good this season too. Christopher Judge is the only one who hasn't had much to do so far...
I also like the new general alot. I don't miss Anderson either. I mean, I like Anderson, but I like Ben Browder better and I think he fits in well with the series. This season so far, imo, is a lot more interesting then season 8 too.
Oh I think that the new enemy is interesting too. Lots of potential.
As for Atlantis, season 1 was really good for the most part, imo.
I'm not sure about season 2 yet though. The storyline with Ford is kind of interesting (though it doesn't make total sense if you think about it too long, imo) and the new guy is kind of interesting.
And the last episode, with McKay, was hilarous.
But, I've been enjoying SG-1 alot more!
Of course, Battlestar Galatica beats them both up. lol. What an amazing series.
Still, Friday night with Firefly, Stargate, Atlantis, and Battlestar is the best night of Sci-Fi ever, imo.
DF2506 " The only thing that could possibly make it better would be if my all-time favorite Farscape was to come back and join the night. Of course, I very much doubt that with Ben being busy on Stargate. lol."

SPOILERS for season 8 and very general spoilers for season 9 . . . . *sigh* I haven't seen S9 yet, since I don't have cable at home. If I start watching the episodes they're playing now, am I going to see huge spoilers that I'll regret seeing?
Season 8 had some indications that the show was going to jump the shark. It also had the Reckoning episodes though, which were absolutely amazing (and would have been a better season finale than Moebius). I still have hope for season nine, although I disliked Prometheus Unbound and therefore don't hold out hope that I'll like Vala's expanded role. I also am unsure about the complete lack of Jack, and Sam's absence early on. That's half the old team gone. Well, I warmed up to Jonas pretty quickly, so maybe I'll like this new team now.

I think that if you are an intelligent tv watcher it's hard to maintain that initial love of a particular show because of the fact that you get used to predicting how this show is going to work.
Also, inevitably, a long run is going to modify the characters and the storyline. It's sad but... not surprising.

Once again, Porter speaks the truth. There were always lame Star Trek episodes (in every series), but we ignored them because we loved them. Except Voyager. It sucked too much to be forgiven.

Voyager eventually became a decent show, it just had a horribly weak start that ground on for seasons, and a relatively weak finish. There was some good stuff in there though.

All of it's out, plus the movies. I think B5 is actually my favorite TV show to date, just 'cause there's no show out there that's pulled off that kind of epic sweep and arc. I love the Shadow War, Sheridan, the Human war, all of that. Tis very, very cool.

Things got better once they dropped the whole "Is this the week that they'll get home?" bit, but I was too frustrated with a lot of other aspects to enjoy it. They dropped too many of the initial storylines, and I think they wasted Seven of Nine's character. Then, of course, they had the most spectacularly stupid series finale ever.

They could have done more with 7 of 9's character, but even so Jeri Ryan (is that how you spell it? Jerry Ryan maybe?) was one of the two best things about that show. When they first brought her on I was irritated because of the obvious eye-candy reasons for doing so, but she turned out to be one of the show's two best actors.

The first spelling was correct. She was indeed one of the best actors on the show, which is why I was so frustrated with what they were doing (or rather, what they weren't doing) with her character. It felt like a whole lot of untapped potential. The sudden romance with Chakotay in the finale just proved that the writers didn't know what to do with her.

They set up a romance between Chakotay and Janeway through the first what, 5 seasons of the show? Then they abruptly changed course. Didn't make a lot of sense.
The Doctor was always my favorite character.

You just have no sense of loyalty Porter. I love TNG just as much now as I did when I was in high school. How dare you insinuate that the series wasn't as good as you remember it? It is as good!! Perhaps your adult cynicism was the cause of your not liking the show. Hm??

See now Porter, there you go changing your mind. You mentioned the seasons 6 and 7 weren't as cool when you went back and watched them later in your life and that's what I was referring to when I said you were disloyal.
(I'm not a fan of season 1 either. Encounter at Far Point makes me cringe. But I have to say that I hate season 2 even MORE because of that stupid Dr. ARGH! I HATE HER!!)

Regarding Dr. Polaski -- it's interesting that she was given almost the exact same personality as Dr. Bones on TOS. People can handle a cranky guy (people loved Bones), but it comes across as bitchy when it's a woman doing it.

Because of a bunch of sciency reasons that you don't understand. It involves matrices and chronometric particle flux, I think.

I didn't see her as cranky, like Bones was. I saw her as patronizing and rude with no sense of humor. She "just bothers me."

Exactly. Because it was convenient for the story, not because it made any kind of sense.
Kinda like how convenient it was that they weren't able to make another Data. Or another 1,000,000 Datas.
But this is one of the big weaknesses of ST in general -- creating technologies that conveniently fit the current plot necessities.

Yep. If I can take an image of my hard drive and put that image on a new hard drive, why can't they image Data's positronic brain and replicate it? When they tried that on B4, he had to "integrate" all the information. My hard drive didn't have to integrate any information; it was already "integrated."

It seems that every other episode introduced a new technology that, if taken to it's conclusion, would spell an end to the ST universe as we know it.
How many "completletely new" forms of life were created on the Enterprise that were never heard from ever again?
Even though they could be really useful?
