So, ketchupqueen, guess what I found when we went grocery shopping today?

Yup, that's right. [Big Grin] Sesame Paste!!!!!! [Party]

So guess what we bought?

And then I went looking for chickpeas, and we found something that may or may not be the same or at least will be closely related. Black Gram. Which means nothing to you, but it looks like chickpeas, only smaller.

Yay!!!!! [Party]

And of course, what do I think of this whole time? You! [ROFL] Because, of course, that just follows naturally. [Kiss]

I'm pretty curious to hear how the black gram does as a chickpea substitute. They're pretty much chickpea *shaped*, sure, but are the flavors of the two beans very similar? I've got a bag of black gram at home that I've been meaning to experiment with for ages, but I haven't gotten around to doing to, so I have no idea how they taste or what their texture is like once they're cooked.

We moved your tahini all the way from Texas here. And we were in TJ's and saw a big slab of chocolate and I thought of you again.

Black gram does not taste like garbanzos. *adds garbanzos to shopping list*

And just think, in not too long, we'll actually have extra money to send it to you!

Gram is the same as chickpea, but black gram is a little different.

In the stores where I shop, there is not only tahini, but many brands and varieties. Jarred, canned, fresh.

Fresh is the best. So creamy. Mmmm.

For some things, you can use fava beans in lieu of chickpeas. Falafel can be made with either.

And, oh yeah, chickpeas take much longer than the other beans to cook up nice and get soft. Pre-soaking is a must.

Or use the canned ones.

Tante, it's in reference to a couple of other threads, in case you were wondering.

I bet you could find them if you tried...

Well, damn! And here I thought . . .

See, here, gram is, I believe, chickpeas. So when the bag said black gram, I wasn't worried. I guess I better look harder. I'm pretty sure I can get chickpeas here - it's fairly popular in Indian cooking. So let me look some more. I had just assumed . . . And you know how that goes . . .

Sigh.
