OK, I've looked and haven't seen anything posted on this, so I thought I'd go ahead.

For anyone who missed it, Pat Robertson called for the U.S. to assassinate Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela, on Monday's 700 Club.

His remarks are quoted in this Washington Post article:

quote:
On Monday, Robertson said on the Christian Broadcast Network's "The 700 Club": "We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability."

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

According to the LA Times, Bush administration reps distanced themselves politely:

quote:
Acknowledging differences with the Caracas government, and saying it should be promoting democracy in the Western Hemisphere, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack called Robertson's remarks "inappropriate."

"This is not the policy of the United States government. We do not share his views," McCormack said of Robertson's suggestion that the United States "take out" Chavez to stop Venezuela from becoming a "launching pad for communist influence and Muslim extremism."

From the same article, Rev. Jesse Jackson wasn't nearly so polite:

quote:
Separately, the Rev. Jesse Jackson issued a statement denouncing Robertson's remarks as "morally reprehensible and dangerously suggestive."

And two Republican Senators who were unlucky enough to be in Brazil when this news broke weren't too polite about Robertson, either. From Bloomberg News:

quote:
U.S. Senators Norm Coleman, Republican of Minnesota and Mel Martinez, Republican of Florida, said a call by U.S. televangelist Pat Robertson for the U.S. government to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was ``irresponsible'' and ``incredibly stupid.''

Too bad our president wasn't visiting Brazil today. We might have gotten stronger statements from the administration.

What can I say? I have never followed Robertson closely enough to tie those particular quotes to him. So I never opened the thread - had no idea it was about Robertson's latest.

Edit to add: I still wonder what the administration would have done if Bush, Cheney, or Condaleeza Rice were with the Senators in Brazil. I think they would have been forced to call the remarks something other than "inappropriate."
