What would you rather have someone enraged at you as - heatedly angered or coolly angered?

In other words, would you rather have someone hotheadedly enraged at you or coldly, frigidly angry at you? Rather be burning outside (and inside?) or inside alone?

It depends. Am I trying to persuade them of something, or am I trying to defeat them?

It depends on who they are, I have one friend, who is female, and very mild mannered who I would rather were heatedly angry, and a male friend, who if heatedly angry would start playing with fire, and breaking things. But those are just two examples, it totally depends on the person.

Defeat them as in what?

Basically, if you've reached controversy on a critical matter, would you prefer having them enraged at you now (more short-term risky, both physical and emotional), or rationally cold (risk of long-term grudge)?

You do not want to have them angered at you, but you've got to face one of the two. Which would you rather face?

Neither. I'd run away and hide.

My preference is to have no one that angry at me. But I suppose the cold shoulder is safer than the hot rage, so I'll chose that one.

Being male (I think this has a lot to do with it) I would prefer some one to be mad at me for a few hours, shouting, even hitting me, than to be angry for a few months.

I'm not talking just about ignorance or a cold shoulder, I mean frigid, rational, actual RAGE. Usually grudged, well-thought and bitter cold.

Of course, if you meant that then OK. I'm afraid I might have been ambiguous, that's all.

I don't like it when people hold grudges. I have a friend like that and he gets mad over small things and then holds grudges. So I'd rather deal with someone's anger on a short term basis rather than a long term basis.

I prefer rage myself. The worst sort, though -- and it's by no means uncommon -- is the kind that starts out as rage and cools into a grudge.

I'm still shuddering from that one, Tom... Not that I haven't been partly like that myself.

To make matters worse, it's the most addictive kind of rage - 'cause it both releases energy and satisfies you with a carefully planned method of despisal.

(Jonathan, Annie told me to tell you that she DID send you a letter as soon as she got yours, but she put a book with it, so it might not have gotten through to you. Did you ever get it?)

Hate is hate. They are both destructive. I think I can handle hot hate better though as it is more obvious. But I don't think either is more destructive than the other.

Why the question?

Hm, it's an interesting question. I don't think I have ever thought about that before. I think that I would rather have someone be openly angry with me because then at least I would be able to deal with it.

Yes, I did, but thanks for asking! [Smile]

As for why the question, it's something that arose a while back in my class. There's no particular reason, unless you're Karl Gustav Jung.

Well if it's a parent, a raging storm of shouting is so much easier to handle than that "I'm dissapointed in you." After they say that you just want to crawl into a hole and die.

Depends on if I'm in arm's reach.

Of course, Pavel's Law states "Sooner or later, you'll be in arm's reach."
