From EW - just a summary, though:

quote:
When Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon looks back on 2005, he can take comfort in knowing that his film-directing debut, the sci-fi Western Serenity, resurrected his canceled-too-soon cult classic TV series Firefly, and was also one of the year's best-reviewed movies. ''I should say I'm above reading reviews,'' he says. ''But I would be lying.'' Alas, Whedon's fond memories are also tainted by Serenity's status as a franchise nonstarter; despite Universal's best marketing efforts, the film only mustered $25 million. ''In the end, it was what it was: a tough sell,'' says Whedon, adding that it appears the Firefly saga has reached its conclusion. He has no regrets — and he's moving on. He's currently penning a Wonder Woman flick for Warner Bros., and has the thriller Goners set up at Universal; he'll direct whichever...

If Morena plays the new Wonder Woman and Nathan's new movie does well, I still think Firefly can make a comeback. [Smile]

I refuse to believe this is the last we'll see of Firefly.

Don't believe everything you read. Joss has been giving quite a few interviews of late, and while he's said elsewhere that he's glad he got to finish the story arc he's also said that given half the chance he'll be right back in the 'Verse.

Also, he's writing another Serenity comic book mini-series in 2006. He ain't done yet.

She would be a good WW! wow!

And I agree, should the opportunity arise for more from the 'Verse, I imagine Joss would jump on it.

Joss suggested on Whedonesque that the EW article used quotations taken wildly out of context. It's not that he's done with Firefly, it's that he's glad that, should he never have the opportunity to revisit the 'Verse, "Serenity" served as some form of closure. He's said many times that he's still got stories to tell.

Despite their "best marketing efforts"? Gee, I don't want to see the poor efforts, then... The only ads I saw for Serenity were on Sci Fi, except for I think ONE in the newspaper and ONE on Fox, both opening week.

I saw several adds for Serenity, not on cable, before opening week, more than some movies at least. I may watch too much tv. I saw it once, I have watched some of the show, and while I'm not in love with it, I would continue to see the movies, because I support Whedon (am watching buffy), and my friends force it.

Joss' post on Whedonesque regarding the EW article:

"All right, now I have to jump in and set the record straight. EW is a fine rag, but they do take things out of context. Obviously when I said I had 'closure', what I meant was "I hate Serenity, I hated Firefly, I think my fans are stupid and Nathan Fillion smells like turnips." But EW's always got to put some weird negative spin on it. But so we're clear once and for all: If you read a quote saying "I'd love to do more in this 'verse with these actors in any medium" all I'm saying is that Nathan has a turnipy odor. It's not his fault, he doesn't eat a lot of them but everyone else in the cast noticed it and tht's not really something I'm prepared to deal with any more. And Jewel said outright she wouldn't do scenes with him except stuff like the SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER funeral scene which was outside in a high SPOILER wind. So if I do manage to find another incarnation for my beloved creation, it will have been totally against my will.

I hope that clears everything up. Oh, and when I say I want to do a Spike movie, it means I have a bunion on my toe.

-joss (by which I mean Tim)

(no, actually me.) "

Best marketing efforts my &*^&. They marketed to existing Firefly fans, and that's it. NO ONE around here knew anything about the movie, and most of them hadn't even heard of it.

smitty, agreed. No one I know (outside the 'Rack) had ever heard of it and the previews made it look like a cheap Sci-Fi flick with unknown actors.

Who decides how many theaters a movie is going to be in? I thought it was in a pathetically small number of theaters. By the time I was able to go, it was only showing over an hour away.

Isn't that what the original Star Wars was?

Agreed. The only ads I saw were on SciFi. I mentioned it to all of my classes, and virtually NONE of my students had heard anything about it. The only exceptions were one or two kids who were already into the series.

btw - in this week's USA Today interview, Joss said:

What's the best-case scenario for the future of the Firefly/Serenity franchise?

"The best-case scenario is that the DVD is such a spectacular, monster hit that we get to make another movie. Then, we get to make another movie. After three movies, we're all very tired. After Serenity: Revolutions, we feel like we've played it out. And then we make another series.

"But, you know, we'll never make Firefly again, because that was a thing that existed and is now gone. And Serenity isn't Firefly, and whatever comes next won't be, either. But I would love to tell more stories of this universe and to hang out with these people on and off for the rest of my career."

Considering Star Wars was considered the height of graphics, and overall looked amazing, no, I'd say it wasn't. And Harrison Ford had just finished American Grafitti, he was well known from that hot success. Also, Alec was a very famous established actor.

I don't think this is the end of Star Wars. Adam Baldwin has been in several things, and will continue to rise up, Nathan Fillion will have a leading role within three years, and Alan Tudyk has been in several movies already and will be in more. The women of Firefly will soon take off as well.

When their names are all much bigger, and Joss has Wonder Woman success under his belt, getting them back together again will cause HUGE buzz, and a sequel will sell itself. It will take time though.

Also, I just realized at Best Buy yesterday that Gina Torres was in that Cleopatra 2525 show.
