Does hitting "delete cookies" in your browser get rid of these things?

If you have set things up so that you automatically log into this forum, it's a cookie. Cookies are everywhere, and they really aren't all that good at tracking where you go. The NSA cookie thing is just a bunch of garbage.
IE 'helper applications' are far more dangerous than cookies. That would be things like Gator or even something like Google toolbar or whatnot.

Yes, deleting cookies will get rid of cookies. You can even keep your browser from accepting cookies, but some websites won't work right without them. Cookies are usually used as place-holders, so if you go from one page to another the system can keep track of what you are doing on that particular site. It isn't so good at figuring out what you do on other sites.

Double click has mastered how to track users on other sites. The other sites link to double click's site, and double click then knows what site you visit.
