I'm doing some work for a professor at school, and it involves researching phone numbers of potential contributors to a C.S. Lewis journal from all over the world. I have no trouble finding free searches for Canada and the States, however I'm running into considerable difficulty in tracking down British and Irish searches that don't charge money. Also, I haven't looked for an Australian or an Indian search yet, but I will need to. I was wondering if anybody here happens to know of any to save me time at work. Thanks.

There are private telephone companies all over the place and they all maintain their own databases. There's no central database for all the phone numbers in India.
Like Sri Lanka. Every telephone provider has their own set of telephone books. And you can only get the telephone books from your own provider. Luckily, most seem to be online these days.

Also I found a few free telephone number searches - perhaps you used a different Google search string? Try those.

I've tried at least one of those, but I'll hit the others. And good to know about India. I'm extra grateful I've only come across the one, thus far.

Not really on topic, but, what they hey -- it's Hatrack.
I have a friend who is a bit computer naive, and, by nature, cautious. Like the type who won't say her name on her answering machine, just "You have reached 732-819-5555, please leave a message.", because she doesn't want to give out too much information. I totally blew her out of the water when I showed her that I could type her phone number, and nothing else, into Google, and get her name, her son's name, and her address. And directions to her house. And a satellite picture of her house. Clear enough to say "You have a boat parked in your driveway, and I guess that is your son's red pickup parked on the street out front." You know the ? That's what she looked like. But less blue. And with hair.

I'm too lazy to use a phone book, and want to look up local numbers online. What do you guys use to do that with? When I google "white pages" I get people who want money (forget that!). Google Phonebook seemed like the thing at first but now it doesn't seem to have anyone's numbers in it. If I google on the person's name, it often turns up a work but rarely a home number. What's the best online search for phone numbers or addresses of local people?

You are probably also listed on other search engines. I requested myself to be unlisted on google and yahoo search, but can't find a way to get myself off msn search.

I use switchboard.com; it's usually pretty good, but it does take awhile (~ a year) for new phone numbers to filter in. Which, if you're friends are moving around a lot, may limit its usefulness.
