at first glance, this game appeared to be really stupid and i never thought i would give it the time of day (like any DDR game). but once i had a few drinks at a party and decided to take my turn as a "Rockstar," it was one of the best games i have ever played. there are lots of classic rock and new rock favorites to choose from, and the mini guitar for a controller actually is a lot more fun that it looks (complete with whammy bar). i didnt make it very far in the game, but i think Guitar Hero is probably one of the most original and fun games i have played in a while.

So, has anyone else had a chance to rock out to this game yet? i just found out that its a bit expensive because the controller u need to play the game is $30-something. I think if any of u know someone with it and knocked it for being silly, give it a shot.

I've really been wanting to get it, and will probably order it next week. I post on another gaming forum where it is universally loved. It also got stellar reviews across the board. What's even more amazing is that the core songs (not the unlockables) are covers, but they're pretty much spot on and sound identical to the original versions. Harmonix really does make the best music games on the planet.

This game is so much fun to play. Unfortunately, it has been sold out everywhere in our area since late November. The entire game/guitar package is $70, but definitely worth it.

More interestingly, will you be able to play the guitar once you finish the game? =)

What is it like in DDR terms? (Or do they apply?) Are you trying to match string plucks with symbols on the screen? Are you trying to match air guitar motions? I'm trying to find out how the game is played. SO far I know it's a video game and it has a guitar shaped special controller and it costs $70. Beyond that, nothing.

If someone asked me about DDR what I'm trying to ask about this game I'd say:

DDR is a game you play on a special mat with a 3x3 grid on it with Up, Down, Right, and Left arrows printed in the appropriate squares. You stand in the middle (safe spot) and as the screen flashes you a series of arrows, you hit the corresponding spaces on your pad with your feet. You do all this in time to music.

So, once again, "What is game play like?" [Wink]

Using the specially designed guitar shaped controller, you watch as the notes (colored to match the buttons on the guitar) travel down a fretboard towards the bottom of the t.v. screen.

As the notes reach the bottom of the screen, you depress the keys on the guitars fretboard and strum the guitar. The types of notes being played vary from a single button push to a held button push.

It's very simliar to DDR, but a lot more fun in my opinion.

Edited: To add a much more meaningful explanation:IGN review

its kinda like the music game Amped, but for guitar solos and stuff like rock songs. and u get to use a guitar to play instead of just a regular controller.

the guitar will work with Gitarooman too, though one of the buttons is off.

From what I hear, if you can get someone with another guitar controller, the two player game really shines. And you can get a special "Cherry" version of the controller from RedOctane.

I'm a game collector and have a number of games for a number of systems, dating all the way back to Atari 2600.

i used to have the old atari too. tho the next system i had wasnt until the N64 a few months before teh GameCube came out. that is when i bought a GameCube soley for the next Smash Bros game. and if the new SSB game looks promising ill get a Revolution to play that one.

anyway, im glad others have found guitar hero as cool as i have. i wish i could play it again, but i dont have a ps2 or the money to buy the game and controller for it. its definently a great latenight drinking party favorite for me and a couple of my dorky friends.

Atari 2600, NES, SNES, N64, NGC, PSOne, PS2, NeoGeo Pocket(Color), GB, GB Pocket, GB Color, GB SP, DS, DreamCast, TI-994a (I know it's a computer, but it has a ton of games)...

As for games.. I only have 4 games for the DS, that would be the lowest number for any system and I have well over 100 for the 2600 not counting duplicates.

I have, at various points in my life, been willing to sell internal organs for an Odyssey 2, a Colecovision, and a Vectrex. I'd still be willing to sell something minor, like an appendix, for a Vectrex.

You don't need to know anything about playing guitar to play this game. It's a lot of fun though. My friend who plays the guitar says it's harder if you actually do know how to play because of the way the fretboard is. You have four (or five) buttons in a line and sometimes you have to push more than one at a time. There are also hammerons and pulloffs.

You know what is really funny... I don't play much.

I'm a social gamer, so if no one is around I'm not interested in gaming. The last game I actually completed was Shadow of the Colossus for PS2. Before that it was Dungeon Siege on PC. Ah, good old DS... There is an interesting story.

ahem...

I can trace my current carrer path all the way back to a single Atari 2600 game recieved as a gift decades ago...

I used to play Atari when I was little; we got it from my cousins. My parents wouldn't buy us anything else like Nintendo.

My kids just got guitar hero and we've been playing all afternoon, it's a riot.

I don't know if you got your questions answered Karl Ed but I wouldn't say that playing this game prepares you to play guitar or does anything other than mimic the actions of playing a guitar (think air band guitar mixed with DDR).

I hope they'll come out with some other music to go with it (I don't know enough about how these things work to know if it's realistic or not) but I think country would be hilarious or some more new wave type music. I'm not into the heavy metal so much but it hasn't stopped me from playing (I can still beat my kids [Big Grin] )

I've had it for a few weeks now and find it thoroughly enjoyable. If anything, I actually wish the metal was heavier. [Wink]

More true than you are probably aware of: computer programs designed by many composers of electronic music have been utilizing PC-based game controllers much like PS2 Dualshock for years. I met one such fairly well known composer from Berkley California who exclusively plays his PC based controller as his instrument of choice. He also programs all of the functions of the controller in a program which was created for that purpose.

I think guitar hero is loosely based on the principles these composers have been developing for many years, which I beleive first appeared in "Ocarina of Time," a zelda game for N64. However, the proffessional version of this device is highly complicated and tedious to use and understand, so I don't have time to learn it myself, or I definetly would.

This is pretty accurate, although I've noticed that if you know how to play guitar, you'll do better your first time playing Guitar Hero (or Guitar Freaks, or any guitar-controller game) than someone who doesn't know how...except for music game pros.

Has anyone tried the dual mode play yet? I think it looks fun but don't get how it could work sound wise...both are playing different parts of the song perhaps?

I would agree with you erosomniac that it is easier initially. Do you think it's because you're already used to moving the left hand fingers and right hand seperate from each other? I've only had beginning guitar lessons but didn't find the game to be very difficult (lol, of course I only play the easy version right now and play for fun not to go "on tour" or whatever my kids are doing now)

This game is amazing and competely addicting. I walked into the local EB games and saw a display of it and thougt it was the most rediculous thing I have ever seen but the guy there made me play and I ended up buying one online the next day. I've beaten easy and medium and am 5 songs into Hard. Everyone who plays it gets hooked and we end up fighting over it. My girlfriend plays everytime she comes over, my cousing actually stole the stupid thing for a week and another cousin who hates video games ended up spending an entire weekend playing it. Itis 70 dollars well invested.

Someone here in the dorm bought a copy of guitar hero, and it's a sensation. Nothing like rocking out to Texas Flood on expert.

Ohhh. You two are too good for me but I agree, it is a great time.

I have to also admit that I *am* getting sick of hearing "I love rock-n-roll" but it becomes a little more bearable when my daughter sings along, "put another dime in the juice box baby". Hopefully they'll learn to enjoy another song soon!
