This will be a short post. And a mayfly, I bet. Woohoo. But it is an interesting little anecdote.

I was talking to my mom today and mention something said on Hatrack. She tells me that it had always slipped her mind but she'd been meaning to tell me she had a coworker a few years back who posted on Hatrack.

Well, I dunno if this coworker's still out there (name of accio, apparentley), but it's just kinda funny to see little links in lives, eh? What's your story of bizarre links (not necessarily involving Hatrack at all)?

My ex-boyfriend happened to be visiting me one day when he glanced over at my computer screen and asked,

"Why are you talking to <real name expunged>?"

"Who?" I asked, baffled.

"You know, <name>," he said, pointing at an open AIM window.

"Err, that's just someone from my MUD. I don't know their name, we were just setting up a trade."

"Oh."

"Why, how do you know him?"

"He's my girlfriend's ex-boyfriend."

A few years ago at my old job, I walked into a colleague's office to find him and another coworker giggling over something they'd posted on Hatrack. Completely threw me for a loop because I had just posted something that had enough information to identify me (to someone who knew me) and it was information that I was trying to keep from friends/coworkers.

I immediately deleted my post (and it was such a trivial thing, I'm amazed I panicked about it) and then my coworker and I spent the next couple weeks sneaking up on one another trying to figure out each other's screen name.

I never did figure his out and I don't think he ever figured mine out... but Luis, if you're still out there, you can come out now...

When I was fifteen, my parents got divorced, and my mom and I moved away as soon as she found a job in a town where she wanted to live. The hotel provided a room for her, but until my mom found an appartement, I was to stay for two months with my aunt in my birthtown.

The 9th grade of the school we chose for me was already pretty crowded, maybe a hundred students, so it was no surprise, that there was only one free place in my new classroom, too. In the break, I chatted a little with the girl who was sitting right beside me, Katrin, and we found out, that both of us were born on the 07/12/79.
The next day, she came to me and asked me if the names of my parents were Ute and Denis, and if my aunt Ellen was the one in the bridal dress who visited my mom in the hospital on the day after my birth. You can guess, I was quite surprised, especially because my mom had no acquaintances whatsoever in this town. We had never lived there.

Somehow, her mom had figured out, that it must have been my mom she had shared a room with in the hospital right after our births, and she remembered all the names, although it took place fifteen years ago.
I think, it is kinda weird that I happened to go to this of all schools and got to know Katrin of all students there. Maybe, we should have stayed in contact...

A friend I met at a summer camp in PA I worked at came down to GA to visit last fall. We went to a Barnes and Noble to pick up some coffee when we saw.....a kid that used to work at the same summer camp we did. She came down for a weekend and we saw the only other person in GA we shared in common. I haven't seen the guy since, but I think that whole episode was very very strange.

Didn't happen to me, but this one is really odd.

A friend of mine had a roommate who dated a guy for awhile, then dropped him (he was, oh, icky). A little while later she found out (in her mid-twenties) that she was adopted (which explained a lot of stuff, by the way)...and that the guy she had been dating was actually her cousin.

And one, with part of the same cast of characters, that did involve me.

The same young woman started dating another guy (he was icky as well; she didn't have really good taste in men). That didn't last long, either. A few months after that, I went to a huge family picnic where I discovered that this guy was, oh, my goodness, some kind of cousin to me...but only by marriage, thank goodness.

I'm full of these stories:

#1) I went to a program called College for Kids a few years ago, and met a kid there who, at the time, kind of looked like my little brother. As a joke, we took a picture of the two of us together. Fast forward about 5 years to last December. I'm in a program called Youth in Government this time, and unbeknownst to me, the same kid is enrolled. It took me until the state convention to realize this...but I never got a chance to talk to him.

#2)On the same note, I was online once and met a kid from Kansas on AOL Messenger. We got to talking and I mentioned I was from Fulton, MO. He said that he had been to a summer academy there. I said that I had, too. And it turns out we had both been there (not the same as the first one).

#3)All freshmen at our school attend BASELINE training in nearby Jefferson City. It's basically a day where we learn about drug free stuff. At the end of the day, three people came to speak to us. One we had already heard at school earlier that year. Another was a 13-year-old kid who had some problems in the family with alcohol. About a year later (last November-ish), a new kid showed up in band. Although I didn't recognize him right away, it was the same kid. We're now really good friends.

#4) [Last one, I promise [Smile] ] I videotape football games for our school team, and we were at an away match at our biggest conference rival. We had some time to kill before the game started, and I was fascinated with watching their marching band practice. My cell phone rang, and it was a friend of mine who wanted to talk to a guy from there, and she wanted to know if I would find him for her. I agreed, and found him. They talked for a while, and we chatted for a few minutes (then I got in trouble by their band director for talking to him while they were practicing [which I don't get, because he wasn't doing anything]). A few weeks later, it's band again. All of a sudden I see the same guy walk in. We're pretty good friends too.

I have more but I don't feel like typing anymore...

Chet once dated a girl who turned out to be his stepfather's niece. Made family get togethers a little awkward.

*Before Taalcon moved to Atlanta, he showed his roommate-to-be a picture of me and Ben. Roommate says, "Hey, I know them!" We had met him at a mutual friend's party.

*A friend who studied abroad with me in Munich ended up becoming roommates in DC with one of my friends from college (in Houston).

*A different friend from college moved to Michigan and now works with one of my best friends from high school. This college friend also knows my brother through a few different messageboards.

Ever go to Six Flags, especially Six Flags over Mid-America in St. Louis.

Don't because it has some sort of weird spatial anomally that effects probability.

I met a woman there who became my wife. My older brother met another woman there, and they are still married. My younger brother met a woman there, and they are married as well.

While working there I watched a full case of mepotism degrade a department as the youngest sister of a supervisor got promoted past me and out of her ability. Her biggest asset was apparently the speed with which she could get drunk and pass out at parties with the supervisors. She bragged about this skill.

Five years later, after such juvenile work skills were long past, my wife was working as a bank teller when she got a new manager. Guess who? (And yes, her alcoholism continued and she continued to ignore it.)

Meanwhile one of my better clients turned out to be another ex-manager, and her old boyfriend.

While working there we also made friends with a clown. We lost track of him for about 10 years, until at a Howdy Doody Rememberance Show at a local mall, we physically ran into each other.

This has nothing to do with Hatrack, but it's a weird happening:

When I was sixteen/seventeen, I dated a boy named J, who lived across the state. J and I often went down to Ft. Lauderdale, always to the same venue, for concerts. We'd split up and mingle a lot. I befriended a lot of the bands, and J made himself a best friend, a guy I'll call P, who lived down in South Florida.

Well, I dumped J after he made out with one of P's friends (in front of me!). I lost touch with P soon after. A year and a half later, a couple weeks into my freshman year of college, I was hanging out with a bunch of guys, and I got to talking to one of them. He said he was from Florida, and he looked awfully familiar, so I asked him his name. I kept trying to place his face. Then I asked him if he'd ever known a guy named J and described my ex-boyfriend.

Turns out, P and I ended up going to the same university! Now we're good friends. [Smile]

I was coming back from a psych conference with a friend of mine and we stopped to get something to eat in some random small town in GA (we went to school in Florida). While we were eating another girl from our school walked in and got some food. She was coming back from a different conference in a different state and just happend to stop at the same McDonalds as us.

I knew this guy who was abandoned by his parents and raised by another couple. When he was grown, he killed his father in a road rage incident and ended up marrying his mother. I think his name was George. As I recall, it didn't end well.

Those kind of things rarely do.
