I'm looking for a [free] program that will split a large mp3 into small mp3s, but I haven't found one that works satisfactorally.

Does anybody know of a good one?

Goldwave is great for that and a heck of a lot more. It comes in a demo version, but it's fully functional, and unless you're using it professionally you'll never use the demo up. One of my favorite programs.

Will Goldwave split mp3s without having to convert it to a wav (or equilavent) and then re-encode it into mp3?

It will if you have the lame encoder, which you probably do.

I don't want to re-encode. I know that there are programs that can split an mp3 file without having to re-encode it into mp3.

I usually just use Goldwave to record audio files (tapes, records, DVDs, TV, etc) into WAV, then I split them and encode them. So I don't use that feature enough to know exactly how to make it work. But I have used it, and I know that it does work that way, and it's not too hard to figure out. You can open your mp3 files, split them, and then when you go to save them if it has a problem it'll walk you through the solution.

You know, now that I think about it, it does say that it's "deflashing" when it reads the mp3, and then it says it's "converting" when it saves it (although it does them so fast I never stopped to think about whether it was converting to WAV and back). So it may be doing what you don't want it to do. I've never noticed any loss in sound quality, but if you're serious about not having it ever go through re-encoding, you might want to look into exactly what it does to the file before using it.

Pity, though. It's a really slick system. Let me know what you find out.

Incidentally, if you don't mind me asking, what are you doing?

What I want to do is take long audio book tracks and split them into, say, 5-minute lenght tracks, since the mp3 player I have is lame and takes forever to search through a long file.

I've got goldwave downloaded. Can you tell me how to do what I want to do?

If you bought a burner with Nero burning software included, there should a wav splitter on there for free. It says .wav but I think you can pull .mp3 too.

Applications to split mp3s exist. This one looks good since it doesn't decode and re-encode. (I have not tried it.)

Do a search for mp3 splitter or mp3 cut. Something along these lines should find something that works.

I'm not positive, Porter, particularly since I've got Goldwave installed on a computer that is, at the moment, not working, so I can't play around with it. (Specifically, I'm not certain about the staying in mp3 and not messing around with .wavs bit.) But, off the top of my head, simply highlighting with your mouse along the wavy window allows you to do stuff like cut, paste, and delete. So I would try something like this, I think: save as <filename> Part 1, highlight and delete everything after the five minute mark, and save again. Reopen the original, save as <filename> Part 2, delete everything before the five minute mark and after the ten minute mark, and save again, reopen the original, and so forth. Again, this may need some tweaking to do what you want, and I can't (easily) play around with my copy to see. But I would expect it to be something along those lines.

Goldwave is a lot easier than that. There's a little flag icon. Just left-click your cursor to the 5-minute mark, click the flag icon, and add a flag to that mark. Add another to the 10-minute mark, etc. When you're done, go back into the flag icon, tell it to split the file, and (without erasing the original) it'll put a series of files in a specified folder that is the original file in 5-minute chunks.

Also, if you need to be more accurate, you can zoom in until as close as you want to.

Really a great program once you get used to it. Let me know if this makes sense.
