I had a quick question I wanted to pose, and rather than making a mayfly, I thought I'd start al all-purpose thread where people with similar mayflyish questions could ask them, and other people who do a lot of home projects themselves could chime in with answers . . .
I'm getting ready to install laminate flooring in my girls' playroom. I've done this before, so it's not new to me. I removed the carpet this morning, and I'm getting ready to remove the padding. The padding is glued down. Last time I did this job, I used a spatula to scrape off the glue residue, and it was a rather tedious and unpleasant job. It occurred to me, as I was reaching for the spatula, that there might be something I could pour or spray on the glue residue that might act as a solvent, and make it much easier to take up. I don't want to go out to buy anything, but maybe I have something useful around the house. Water? Glass Plus? Anything?
Does anybody have any good idea of something I could use to painlessly take off the glue residue?

There are several products out there that will remove adhesive residue, I know my husband uses some on his job sites. I think one is called Goo Gone.
If you go to a hardware store and ask, I'm sure you'll find several things that might help. Good luck! I may be asking you for advice, because we plan on putting down the laminate that looks like hardwood in our kids rooms too - you don't even want to know what the carpet currently looks like!

When we did that (ten years ago) the hardware store didn't suggest anything, and we used a hoe with no bend.

There are several products that would probably work. I would look in the area where they sell the paint stripping chemicals.

I've got something like this. It actually seems to be coming up a lot easier this time, because last time I pulled the padding out and then went about trying to remove the glue residue. This time I'm scraping it as I unroll the padding, and it seems to be coming up better.
I think I actually have some GooGone, but not in the industrial quantities it sounds like I would need.

You probably wouldn't want to use it on your floor but lighter fluid is great at removing adhesives. If you ever need to peel a sticker off of something without marking it, pour a small amount of lighter fluid on it, allow it to soak in a little, and it should peel right off.
