For Cinco de Mayo, I MUST WEAR ETHNIC CLOTHING. I've never done it and I feel that I must do it this year. Trouble is that I cannot find a decent looking mexican dress anywhere. I tried eBay, but to no avail. This is, that I want to dress more or less like in the Veracruz fashion or in the Charro fashion. I cannot find any authentic dresses out there and I don't want a peasant's dress. Can you guys use your all-powerful Google-fu to help me on this search?

I don't know how to make links. But, if you put "China Poblana" into your search engine, you will find lots of info. Both venders and pictures you could use for a "build it yourself".

How about Guatemalan huipils? Perhaps that's not the ethnicity you're looking for but there are Mayans in southern Mexico, I think.

In my local Wal-Mart, the people working there are largely Mexican and Indian immigrants. I mean no insult by this. It just is.
But now that I think of it, and re-read it, what I wrote does sound insulting. I apologize for offense given, and I thank you, Tom, for pointing it out to me. Really.

Alty, they're usually cheaper if you get them in downtown L.A. than online. I happen to live tolerably close and have bought them before. If you e-mail me your size and how much you're willing to spend, any color preferences, etc., I'd be happy to go down and comparison-shop for you... (I've been meaning to take Emsie to see Olviera Street before we have her sister to contend with as well, anyway. ) And there are other options, too... E-mail me if you're interested!

Actually, isn't the Independence Day in January the more 'official' Mexican holiday? Not that I am nit-picking (okay, maybe a little bit), just curious.
I am the person who chose to get married on May 5th so her husband would never forget our anniversary. *grin* We are Californios and our 'comfort food' is the quesadilla and enchilada.
From what I understand, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the U.S. than it is in Mexico (much like St. Patrick's Day in Ireland vs. the U.S.).

.....Independence day is September 16th... That one is actually the most celebrated, there is a huge party at the D.F. and even the president comes out and does the whole "El Grito" thing.
And yeah, I think cinco the mayo is far more celebrated in US than in Mexico, whereas people here in Free Country don't know much about September 16th. I'd like to dress up for September too, though. Although a more festive dress would be what I'd get, something more a la "China Poblana" or the type of dress folkloric dancers use for the "Jarabe Tapatio". I've always wanted one of those dresses...
