My cat...is meowing pathetically, whilst a bird squeals and flops around because she's been beating on it for 10 minutes and I've JUST now noticed.

Who here has cats and why do they meow pitifully when they beat on a bird???

replace "pitifully" with "playfully" and you may have your answer.

We had nasty bluejays when I had a cat. This time of year they would divebomb and strafe the poor cats in an effort to keep them away from the bluejay eggs. Now that was some pitiful meowing.

The pity you heard was probably the cat upset that you hadn't noticed the lovely winged present it was bringing you.

Well I actually got up and investigated. I think she was upset because she accidentally dropped it in the small space between the back of the washer/dryer and the wall and couldn't get to it.

My cats tend to eat (or somehow dispose of, I don't really want to know) most of the bird (or mouse, or squirrel, or whatever) but leave odd entrails on the porch...
