Okay, my online course includes a chat on Tuesday night we're supposed to attend.

I tried to access the chat room today (the actual chat isn't until 9:00 pm) but I wanted to make sure I had all the right software.

When I click on the page, at the bottom of the screen there's a message that says "Chat Applet Started" or something like that. Then, when I click on the chat room, Internet Explorer locks up. Every time. I never get further than the school's webpage, I don't think the chat applet is actually running at all.

Now, I've done everything the school help site suggests. I've downloaded the latest Java software. I've made sure it's enabled in my browser, all that stuff. I'm using Windows XP and IE 6. Everything else in my online class works fine except for the chat.

I went to Sun's java troubleshooting site and apparently applets are working fine because I could see the little dancing figure they said I was supposed to see.

Is there anything you guys can suggest before I go to the college's helpdesk? 'Cause I've been there before and let me tell you, they aren't helpful. But if I can't access this chat, I might start off on the instructor's bad side, and I don't want to be there. [Frown]

do you have a spam blocker? Sometimes a spam blocker or other software could be effect connection. Also, under tools, then under internet options and then finally under advanced, check to make sure your java is enables. If it is not, enable it and restart your computer!

No it doesn't work with Firefox either. I've already checked to make sure that Java is enabled and it is. I've also turned off most of my security settings to see if it makes a difference, including my pop-blocker.

No good. I'm guessing it might be a problem on the university's end and not mine? I guess I've got no choice but to contact them.

Same result from my husband's computer, so I now think it's their problem, not mine.
