I just finished watched Masterpiece Theater's "Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking" with Rupert Everett, and it got me to thinking. As a big fan of the old Hammer Horror films and Victorian-themed mysteries, can anyone recommend some good turn-of-the-twentieth century or earlier-themed horror, supernatural or adventure novels?

I'm read Lovecraft and Dracula a million times, and I love The List of Seven (though its sequel was weak) and recently discovered Barbara Hambly's Those Who Hunt The Night and its sequel. Though I like Victorian-themed mysteries and book like The Alienist, I'm looking for anything with a more supernatural bent.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was brilliant, though the movie stank to high heaven and I stopped reading Volume Two after Alan Moore decided to make it pornographic. [Eek!]

Anyone out there with similar interests and, if so, any suggestions?

Knowing Alan Moore, pretty much everything he does is planned to be pornographic (by what I perceive to be your standards) from the start. So don't read anything by him, ever [Smile] .

At the same time, one of the best works in those categories published in recent years is From Hell. Of course, it also has its "pornographic" moments (what do you expect, its about Jack the Ripper, a serial killer targeting hookers!).

For something not quite in those categories, try Lovecraft's Cthulhu (and other) stories. They're excellent.

Oh, I get his tongue-in-cheek humor when it comes to producing so-called pornography, aka bodice-rippers, but the 4-5 spreads of two characters getting it on was a bit much (and totally stupid).

The first volume, though still very adult in nature, could have been a brilliant film. Too bad the writer and director didn't seem to get what made the story work in the first place.
