I didn't really see a thread about the 360, there were a couple where it was mentioned but nothing really about what people thought. I just picked mine up yesterday so I still haven't had a lot of time to play around with it but so far it is an amazing system.

The very first thing I noticed was how heavy the darn thing is. I was shocked when the sales man handed me the box. This is a dense little machine. I only assume that means there is a lot of heavy duty equipment making the sucker run.

I absolutely love the new controllers. I've got the wirless version. This is my first experience with wireless gameplay and it's awesome. No lag or weird glitches that I had heard some wireless controllers ahd problems with.

I bought the gameCall of Duty 2 and haven't stop playing since I brought it home. It's a lot of fun and ghe graphics are amazing. A really neat, gritty first person shooter taht really puts you into the world as it was during WWII.

But the coolest feature by far is Xbox Live. I've been a live subscriber for about a year and a half now and have always thought it was really well thought out and done, but after seeing what they have done with the new version, holy crap. It's unbelieveable. Xbox Live marketplace is freaking awesome. I downloaded a few trailer and game demos yesterday. It's sweet. Everything is really easy to manage as well.

Right now I'm just blown away with this machine. I've been an xbox guy for a while now. I own all the other platfroms but have ignored the others for the most part during the last year so I may be a bit biased and I know there are some out there that are waiting for the PS3 and could care less about the 360 but wow, really... wow. I hope the PS3 kicks as much butt as the 360.

What do you other owners think? general impression, specific critisisms, fanboy shouts of glee. I know I'm a bit late on this one, the 360 been out a while but I missed the 1st shipment and the second wave just hit so more people may actually own one now.

Do you have any other games for it yet? None of the 360 launch titles I saw really excited me. I like the idea of Live Arcade quite a bit, but not enough to justify buying another console at this time.

The reading about Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is really tempting me. I said I'd wait till after my vacations this summer, but I'm not sure I'll be able to.

Having played with one extensively at a friend's place, I'm planning to buy one of my own this year. First, though, I have to replace my crappy 27" SDTV with a shiny new HDTV, preferably of the 40"+ variety. And before I can do that, I have to pay for a plane ticket to New Zealand.

Purchasing all three at once would require me to carry a balance on my credit card and thereby incur interest. I've never been in debt and don't plan to start now, so I suppose I'll just have to wait. It's not as though my video game queue isn't already plenty long. [Wink]

Dude, I really wouldn't buy one this year. Wait until the Revolution and PS3 come out, then pick one up (if you still want the X-Box) after Microsoft drops the price even further due to the competition.

If I game, I usually use my computer -- better controls, better graphics, and upgradeable hardware (as well as usually better games, since they're often upgraded by the time of a PC release). But I'm really tempted to pick up a Revolution next year. Just imagine the swordfighting parties I could have...

Oooooblivion, Oblivion, Oblivioooooon!

I'm hooked if you can't tell. I also had loads of fun with NFS:MW, except the game medium kept being bad. I got 4 different copies before I was happy.

I must say, I really like the global profile idea. No more "little brother overwrites 250 hour save file for Morrowind" accidents.

PS3 release date is pushed waaay back, so that plan may be shot. That was my original intent, though.

I played a King Kong demo in Best Buy not too long ago. Prettiest game I've ever seen.

I'd be happy with a regular Playstation.

Or a Sega Genesis.

Crash Bandicoot and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Anything else is what the computer is for.

I just rented oblivion and so far it seems pretty cool. Haven't really had a chance to play much yet. I'm kind of looking forward to the new tomb raider. Hoping it might be a nice throw back to the days of the original and actually be fun.

The multiple mentions of Oblivion lead me to clarify my position to: Are there any games worth playing on the 360 that I wouldn't be better off just getting for my PC?

You rented Oblivion? For how long? Months? A Year? That makes no sense to me. How do you expect to even come close to finishing on the sort of timetable rental places run? AHHH!

Well, renting something like that would help you figure out if dropping $60 is worth it. And nowadays, you can keep your save games so it's not like you have to start over (say, if you rented Final Fantasy II back in the day).

Whoa. I had TOTALLY forgotten about that. TOTALLY. That must've been weird. But then again, I was probably too young to care.

***Rant alert***

Oh, and Beatnix, where are you able to rent 360 games?!?! It's been driving me bonkers because I can't find a single place that rents them (well actually, that's a lie, just last month Blockbuster finally told me that two Gamerush stores in the area have very few copies of very few games). But besides the local chains which aren't carrying them yet, and Blockbuster, I don't know where else to turn. The prospect of renting games physically altogether is getting rather annoying. The local stores get 1-2 copies in of a limited number of games at MOST, and Blockbuster gets around 2 copies for a not popular game, and 10 or so for a popular one. But they NEVER have them in stock, and NEVER have a clue to when they are getting them back (Well, it was checked out yesterday, and it's due in a week, but there is a one week grace period, and it's possible they could have the 2 month gaming pass, or they might have the unlimited pass...). And the reason they haven't had any 360 games in is because, "Microsoft hasn't made enough copies of the games". I'm going to go ahead and call total BS on that statement. Printing off discs is INCREDIBLY fast and easy, especially compared to making consoles. I always see tons of 360 games just sitting on the shelfs in stores.

I'm a huge fan of the downloadable demos from the marketplace, as that's the only way I've been able to try games.

Anyways, I'm sorry that turned into a rant. The thread is now free to go back about its business.

My brother dropped the $60 on Oblivion... and the $insaneamount for the Xbox.

I must say, we've gotten $60 worth out of it.

I've had a 360 for about 4 months now, and I still love it. The marketplace was really cool at first, but it's since lost the charm for me. New things seem to get added to it at a really slow pace, too slow for me anyway. Downloading a level or part of a game to see whether you want to buy it is sweet. I would highly recommend downloading Geometry Wars.

Out of the three games my roommates and I have bought Oblivion is the unanimous favorite. We all have different styles of playing through it (I'm the thief) and we all enjoy it thoroughly. Next on our list is Call of Duty 2, then Project Gotham Racing 3.

You make a good, and somewhat valid, point Tick. I haven't purchased a new system since the SNES, so all my experience comes from old technology and computers. I remember renting Crono Trigger and Final Fantasy II back in the day, and being frustrated that I couldn't finish. In fact, I rented Crono Trigger twice, got to the same point both times, then swore off it til the rental store sold it to me for 5 bucks when SNES became obsolete.

I rented from Family Video. they have just about every title that is out right now. 5 days for 5 bucks. And I rented for exactly the reason the Tick said, I want to make sure its a game I will play enough tomake 60.00 bucks worth the investment. I bought Morrowwind because it was the game to have and after playing for a few days I realized I didn't really care for it and have never picked it up since. But so far I'm enjoying Oblivion.

I'm guessing that things will pick up. If you rememebr when the original xbox dropped, it seemed like it took forever for any thing to get moving. Games were slow in coming and I'm sure that this is the same case right now. At least I'm hoping. It's such an awesome idea and I hope they really push it to the max.

The price isn't the biggest factor in my decision-making process. [Added: That is to say, the HDTV and the ticket to NZ both cost about the same, but the 360 costs much, much less.] Also, I'm not as interested in the other two consoles -- and I say that as someone who owns a GameCube and a PS2. I like the Revolution concept, but one of its biggest selling points (the Nintendo and Sega back catalogues) is irrelevant to me since I'm not interested in NES, SNES, or Genesis games.

The 360, with its limited but intuitive media centre capabilities, is a step along the road to a networked home stereo and theatre for me.

This varies by genre. True for many FPS and most RTS games, certainly, but not much aside from that.

Smaller screens, though. This is something of a wash. Not to mention that a computer capable of matching Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter on the 360 would cost a lot more than the 360 does. Video cards alone cost that much -- and I should know, I paid close to that sum for my Radeon 9800 Pro back when it was top of the line. [Smile]

Having standardized hardware means fewer bugs, greater stability, and in general the "it just works" feeling that is one of the major reasons why the console game market is so much bigger than the computer game market. You don't have to futz about with anything yourself, you just put the game in the machine and play.

Having said all of that, I grew up gaming on computers and never had any interest in consoles until Metroid Prime on the GameCube. I still game on my computer regularly, particularly multiplayer.

I'll be curious to see how the inevitable Metroid Revolution title plays, that might sell me on one. 480p on the Revolution is a drawback, but not a dealbreaker for me. It'll still look decent on a nice HDTV.

At this point? Not really, unless Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter is the sort of thing you find compelling. I really enjoyed it when I played it last weekend, enough so that I'll buy it when I buy a 360, but I wouldn't call it a system-seller. I also wouldn't play it on my computer.

I really like that MS has released cheap tools for indie developers to produce and deploy arcade titles. I think that's going to spur development in that area and I'll be very interested to see the results.

I just looked on GameSpot, and the only decently rated Xbox 360 games that I'd be interested in playing look to be Elder Scolls IV, Kameo, and some of those cheap arcade diversions of which there's no shortage on any game system or computer. All the rest of the games seem too realistically grim for me. Maybe it's just because I grew up playing Super Mario Bros. etc., but it doesn't seem like it'll be very fun to figure out the secrets of a lot of the Xbox 360 games.

Interesting pricing on the PS3 vs 360 vs Revolution. While I haven't even considered buying a Nintendo platform since the SNES, the lower pricing, cheaper games, and back cataloging of the Revolution might just convince me, if this new controller turns out not to be a nightmare. I know many people think it's cool, but to me it seems like it would detract from gameplay with that button setup.
