Major League Gaming, the first professional video game league (of course there's a professional video game league) has just announced that the MLG 2006 pro circuit will be broadcast on the USA Network, finally catapulting the grueling challenge of video game competition into the fast-paced world of professional sports. I don't know about you, but I can't wait. . .

A video game tournament, depending on the game, would be more interesting than every pro sport I can think of.

A video game tournament, depending on the game, would be more interesting than every pro sport I can think of.
One also has to assume that the majority of what would be shown on TV would be direct screen captures of the game. If the camera is pointed at somebody sitting at a computer, okay that's dull. But I've been entertained by videos of Quake being played by pros before.
As for boring television though, ESPN2 has broadcast Magic: Teh Blathering (er, I mean "Gathering") tournaments before.

And honestly, given the recent surge in excitement over pro POKER, I can't see how watching a FPS tournament or even a RTS tournament would be less interesting.
Provided, of course, that they use direct screen captures, which would be the only logical choice. Showing the player sitting there would be the equivilant of televising a sports game zoomed in on nothing but a player's face the entire time.

The Mountain Dew part was awesome, considering it's a staple at all of our Halo parties. Some of my friends subsist of Mountain Dew. They've been known to keep a few liters in their cars so if a resturant doesn't offer it, they'll go out and get their fix. Posts: 2827 | Registered: Jul 2005

Drat! I forgot to include the "Skittles Player of the Moment" bit, or anything about the scandal of one player having his thumb surgically split to accomodate more buttons. This is what happens when you write about gaming (and know nothing about it) in the style of professional sports (when you know nothing about it)...
