The marketing department at the newspaper where I work is running a “behind the scenes” promotion that showcases individuals that the public doesn’t usually see, as a way of making the whole process of news more personal. One of those people is, apparently, me, and here’s what ran in our Sports section (?) last week.

Check out the ad

In my defense, I didn’t write the copy, and I was kinda hoping they’d use the shot where I had my head cradled on top of my monitor (”Precious! My precious!”). But I am pleased that, in a roundabout, hidden-in-the-background way, I got to plug a bunch of my favorite things. Can you identify all the Serenity items? Find the different Deaths? Locate the two different PvPonline references?

And nope, my column was not mentioned. I was given the option, but I figured I'd go with the part of my job I'm actually paid for.

You didn't bring in the Serenity Barbies for this?

I read the sentence "You know guys like me." differently than the person writing the copy probably intended. I actually had to read it several times before I parsed it correctly.

I wondered about that, too...

Nope, I had no warning when they were going to do the picture, so I had to make do with the paltry thirty or forty toys on my desk.

Yup. I like WordPress, I use it for my site and for serenitystuff.com. Very handy.

Although upgrading is a pain. They require you to delete your previous installation (leaving your personal files, databases, and graphics in place) before installing the new build. My server is a Unix box with security restrictions that don't allow me to delete folders with anything in them, so I have to go folder by folder, subfolder by subfolder, deleting everything manually, before I can upgrade. Very annoying. Love the program, hate the upgrade process.

Yeah, wordpress is what I use too. Yours is just implemented lightyears better than mine.

Do you use gallery software for yours and your wife's artwork? Or just style those pages separately? I use gallery2.1 (actually, a plugin that integrates it into wp called wpg2), and I don't have any complaints. But I want to scan in some of my drawings and keep them in a separate folder from my pics.

(The site is here if you want a visual)

Agreed about updating wordpress. They don't make it easy, from what I've heard.

Those pages are coded separately, mostly because this was an existing site I grafted WP onto. Had I started from the beginning as a blog, as I did with SS, it would look different. I still may convert all the way over.
