Down here in Florida, or at least in the backwoods of Central Florida, we have this thing called Mud Runs. On Monday nights (I think it's once a month, but I can't remember which Monday) a bunch of people gather around this big long stretch of, you guessed it, mud. Different classes of trucks run time trials through the mud. There's even a footrace half way through the night. It's a big ole backwoods party.

A while back I was talking to a friend of mine in the backwoods of West Virginia and she'd never heard of Mud Runs. However, she enlightened me as to the beauty of Tractor Pulls. I'd never heard of these, but as near as I can gather, it's like tractor tug of war. I'm not actually sure on that, it was all very confusing, her description of it.

But it got me to thinking, what other backwoods activities are there that I don't know about?

I have yet to enjoy it... but I hear that down here in No'f Ca-ca-laca (aka NC where I recently moved) there are school bus races. Meaning - races between school buses on dirt race tracks where there are essentially no rules... I can't wait to see this!!!

I grew up in a town that had an annual Beef Fest. This would be understandable if we had a lot of dairy farms around here, but we don't. We just have a lot of Beef Connesieurs.

A Tractor Pull, I believe, is like a tug-o-war but then again it isn't. I think it's more like drag racing.

Tractor pulling, also known as power pulling, is a competition using tractors to pull a heavy sled along a 'course' and is very popular in rural areas. Usually the sled gets harder to pull the further you travel. It can make for great spectacle, because although the vehicle makes a lot of noise and smoke and throws a lot of mud everywhere, it doesn't actually travel that far. There are many different classes, from 'factory' tractors to custom built vehicles with multiple powerful engines.
