If you go to another country on a private plane/jet do you still need a passport?

Yes. To be legal.

Except, I suppose for special circumstances like some diplomats or soldiers.

Even diplomats and soldiers need some form of ID. Passports are suggested so that your military or government connections are not obvious to those looking to vent anti-american sentiments.

The Passports are not to allow you entry on the plane. They are to allow you entry into the country.

Even if you succeed in getting to a foreign country without having to show them your passport and your travel visa, if you don't have it when you return to the US, you may not get in.

Yes, anyway you slice it.

I have a passport that expires in 2010 and it predates all the special anti forgery measures that were taken to prevent people from illegally copying one.

They are in pretty high demand on the black market I hear.

Depends on your nationality, originating point, and destination. eg Americans can travel from the US into Canada and northern Mexico without a passport

Something Detroit and Windsor both aren't really happy about.

But I think it's good for the sake of security.
