I've been reading The Wind in the Willows to my four-year-old nephew.

One thing we both agree on: It'd be really cool to spend a day just "messing around in boats" with Rat and Mole.

Which fictional characters would you enjoy hanging out with?

Just wrote a list, then saw that it was enjoy spending a day with. I know a lot I'd like to meet, but a day with them could be kind of annoying. For instance, I would like to meet Wolf Larsen, but I wouldn't likely enjoy being around him for any length of time. The sad truth is that I enjoy spending time with females much more than males, but most of my favorite literary characters are male. [Dont Know]

Who I'd like to spend a day with...

1) Arya from Eragon
2) Stephanie from the Evanovich books
3) Stripe from 'hope for the flowers'
4) I can't remember her name but the main character from 'A Handmaid's Tale'
5) Pete Hallam from 'A Separate Peace' + 'Peace Breaks Out'

: )

She didn't really HAVE a name, that was one of the points of the book. But she was known as Offred, at least during the time we knew her. We never learn her real name.

Oh, and Faramir. *dreamy fan girl sigh*

10)Sherlock Holmes for the logic
9) Gandalf for the fireworks
8) Ender--the elder--to talk about life.
7) Q for the fun of it.
6) Superman, just for the opportunity to possibly save the world.
5) Humphrey the Magician of Knowledge, because a day in Xanth would be the ultimate vacation.
4) Hiro, and I haven't even watched Hero's yet.
3) Emma Peel. Class, romance, and tight leather. I could spend a day with that.
2) Merlin from T.H. Whites the Once and Future King.
1) Richie Rich. Hey, the kid knows how to have fun, and can afford it.

Now, the one fictional character I'd like to spend the night with? Paris Hilton.

Come on. She has to be fiction.

Miles Vorkosigan or Phčdre nó Delaunay

Phčdre is one of the few characters from fiction who I think if we met, would like me. Or at least, not find me insufferably annoying, the way Miles would.

I believe Gilbert was his first name. But I'm with you on the wait until she's married part, so I'd say Anne Blythe. [Smile]

My other choices would include Gandalf, Oy (from The Dark Tower), Luet (from the Homecoming series), and Rama and Sita (from the Ramayana series by Ashok K. Banker.)

And I would most definitely enjoy spending a day with Pippi Longstocking, Emile from Lenneberga and Carlson-Who-Lived-Up-On-The-Roof -- my favorite Astrid Lindgren characters.

We sort of learn her name. It takes some obsessive rereading, though. She lists about half a dozen names during one of the 'Night' interludes when she is remembering her time at (what was it called...the compound? Whatever- ) the place with the Aunts and all the other girls training to be Handmaidens. Over the course of the book, all the names are mentioned except June, so one can assume that it is Offred's real name.

Who would I spend time with? Such a long list...here's a couple.

-Gilbert from What's Eating Gilbert Grape? by Peter Hedges
-both Diane and Mark "Rent Boy" Renton from Trainspotting and Porno by Irvine Welsh
-Travis from Almost Like Being In Love by Steve Kluger
-Sibilance T. Spooner from Midnight Hour Encores by Bruce Brooks
-Dirk Gently from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams (Because, for the record, I can be easily won over by punning).

Dr. Watson (Holmes' companion) because he seems like good people.

Anne Blythe (I'll ditto Rivka on this one, she was a little more mellow after having kids, but maybe we could get her away from Susan for the day?)

Corran Horn because, duh, he's hot and awesome. I suppose Mirax would be okay, too. And our kids could hang out. Oh, along the same lines, Wedge Antilles. Let's just make it a group get-together and include Tycho, Winter, and their kids in there, too.

Wow, what a question to start the day...

I think that myself, Mrs_maven and the Toddling Tornado will opt for a ride behind Ivor the Engine, and then have a fish and chip supper on Tewyn beach listening to the Grumbly Town Choral Society (soprano lead, Idris the Dragon).

Ivor the Engine Homepage

There's lovely for you isn't it.

If I wasn't feeling so family minded, I agree that a day with Valentine Michael Smith would be an eye-opener!

Right, back to work - but with a smile on my fizog! [Smile]

You know, I'd like to meet Phedre too. And Joscelin. Phedre is definitely a compelling character, I thought I'd hate those books and several times questioned why I was still reading them (as I'm not normally a fan of graphically portrayed violent sex scenes) but I find them to be well written and just plain intriguing. Besides, Phedre knows the name of God!
