It is supremely irritating to me how Clint Eastwood continually gets nominated. He's okay, but he's not that much better, and the academy is just so delighted with an actor who expanded.
Bummer for Dreamgirls and Brad Pitt. I'm happy about the Abigail Breslin, though. I wish Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth had gotten more as well.

Meryl Streep was nominated for 'Devil Wears Prada?' The mind boggles. I mean, she was great, but she played the same emotion throughout the whole film. There just wasn't enough character there to work with...

Yet again, I am mostly disappointed. But then, I don't claim to be a movie connoisseur. I'm mostly disappointed because the music ones are almost all from films I didn't see, and those are what I really enjoy. Oh well.
Edit: Woo! 2000 posts. Go me

How can you enjoy films you haven't seen?
Or are you saying that the material coming out of Hollywood these days is of such poor quality, one can only enjoy the films one does not actually view?

Eh, it's the Academy. They'd nominate Streep for flossing her teeth if they could.

I'm disappointed that Leonardo Dicaprio wasn't nominated for The Departed. I thought he was amazing in that film. I can understand not nominating him for two things, but still, I think he deserved that nomination. And I'm really happy about Abigail Breslin. She is so cool. I'm proud to share her name.

I haven't seen any of the films nominated for best picture, or for best directing.
I've seen half the films for best lead actor, and vote for Leo in "Blood Diamond."
Haven't seen most of the female leads either, but I vote AGAINST Meryl Streep, and detest the Academy for the fact that she was even nominated.
Vote for Djimon Hounsou for "Blood Diamond" and best supporting actor.
Haven't seen any of the actress supporting movies, but I plan to see Babel and Last King of Scotland this weekend, that ought to clear some of this up.
Days of Glory doesn't start playing around here for another few weeks I think, but it looks good, it's about French Algerians that fight for France against Germany in WW2, and what happens to them, how they are treated by the Allies and that sort of thing. Right now though my vote would have to be for Pan's Labyrinth. And has best animated film always had it's own category? Why are there only three movies nominated? And how are Over the Hedge and Hoodwinked not two of them?
Never fails, no matter how many dozens of movies I see every year, the majority of my favorites are left out of the awards.

I woke up real early and watched the announcement live. It's a tradition of mine.
And it made me excited for the day. I saw an online comparison of who's won what award throughout this award season, and apparently Helen Mirren has won 23 of the 26 Best Actress awards given - and deservedly so. Here's hoping she wins again.
When do we get to start making predictions?

The Acadamy *hates* Leo. I dunno why. He must be a real pendejo in real life or something. They skipped over him for Titanic when even the rats got nominated for Best Supporting Vermin.
I read through all the nominees and the only ones I've seen were Children of Men (last weekend. I still feel hopeless and depressed and like I want to drink a big glass of Quietus), Superman Returns and Pirates II. The rest of them just seem so dull. It's been a bad year for movies, I fear.

Dissatisfaction with The Academy's choices is the key reason why so many folks just create their own mock "Academy Awards." Where they award the nominees with no regard for the actual winners.
I disagree with The Academy so much I just don't respect their opinions on anything anymore. There is too much bias and hidden unrelated reasoning behind their choices.

I didn't know they'd nominate a foreign film for so many awards other than best foreign film. (Pan's Labyrinth). Not that I disapprove.

So are there different awards (Golden Globes or whatever) that folks here agree with/respect more than the Oscars?

Seriously, I don't watch any of them, nor do I pay attention to any of them, so I have no idea what is respected in general. They tend to look like popularity contests more so than anything else, near as I can tell.
